Gladys Aylward’s life story reads like an epic tale of faith, courage, and unwavering determination. Born into a working-class family in London in 1902, Aylward’s journey from a parlor maid to a missionary in China is a testament to her extraordinary resolve and devotion to her calling. Her work left an indelible mark on the lives of many. Particularly the orphans she rescued and cared for during tumultuous times.

Aylward’s early years were humble, with her formal education ending at fourteen. She found employment as a parlor maid, which she enjoyed despite its demands. However, her life dramatically turned in her mid-twenties when she attended a revival meeting. That night, Aylward became a Christian, and her newfound faith completely transformed her life’s focus.

She joined the Young Life Campaign, dedicating her off days to learning how to share the gospel. Aylward felt a strong call to serve in China through one of their magazines, where many had yet to hear the Christian message. Despite her lack of formal education and being in her late twenties, she presented as a candidate for the China Inland Mission in 1929.

Although initially accepted into their training program, Aylward was asked to leave after three months. Undeterred, she returned to her maid work, saving money to fund her journey to China. Her perseverance paid off, and she had enough to travel within a year, thanks to contributions from friends and employers.

Aylward’s arrival in China in 1932 marked the beginning of her missionary work. She joined missionary Jeannie Lawson in Yangcheng, where they ran The Inn of Eight Happinesses. This place served as a waystation for mule caravans and a place to share the gospel. Aylward quickly immersed herself in the language and culture, adopting local dress and customs.

Her missionary work took a dramatic turn when she began taking in unwanted and orphaned children. It started with a beggar woman offering her daughter for sale. Aylward, moved by compassion, adopted the child, naming her Mei-en, or “Ninepence.” This act of kindness led to the inn becoming an orphanage, prompting the provincial governor to start a school.

The outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 thrust Aylward into a new role. She became a Chinese citizen to better identify with those she served. As a result she found herself behind enemy lines, reporting information to the Chinese authorities. Her efforts earned her the name ‘Ai-weh-deh,’ meaning ‘Virtuous One.’

Perhaps the most harrowing chapter of Aylward’s life was rescuing over a hundred orphans during the war. With the Japanese closing in, Aylward led the children on a perilous 12-day journey across mountains to safety.

Despite running out of food and facing numerous dangers, they received help along the way, including from a Buddhist priest and Chinese soldiers. When they reached the Yellow River with no boats in sight, Aylward and the children prayed, and miraculously, a Chinese officer arranged their crossing.

Aylward’s influence extended far beyond her lifetime. After being forced to leave China when the Communists gained power in 1949, she established the Gladys Aylward Orphanage in Taiwan. Resulting in continued work with abandoned children. Her story gained widespread attention with the publication of Alan Burgess’ biography “The Small Woman” in 1957. As well as the subsequent film “The Inn of the Sixth Happiness,” which, despite its romanticized portrayal, helped raise funds for her cause.

Aylward’s legacy is one of faith and tenacity. She was an unlikely candidate for missionary work, but her unwavering faith and determination enabled her to overcome insurmountable obstacles. Her life challenges the complacent and encourages the discouraged, showing that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things through faith.

In the vibrant tapestry of the Christian faith, a concerning phenomenon exists – the lukewarm Christian. These individuals, while professing belief in Christ, often struggle to fully embrace the transformative power of their faith. As we delve into this topic, let us examine the characteristics of the lukewarm Christian and explore practical steps to reignite the flame of devotion. Are you one of them?

” I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” (Rev. 3:15-16)

The term “lukewarm Christian” is derived from the biblical passage in Revelation 3:15-16, where Jesus admonishes the church in Laodicea for being neither hot nor cold but lukewarm. This metaphor paints a vivid picture of a faith that lacks the fervor and commitment expected of true believers.

Lukewarm Christians often exhibit a range of concerning behaviors. They may attend church regularly, yet their participation is brief, lacking the genuine engagement and passion that should characterize a life transformed by Christ. Their prayer life may be infrequent, often thinking they don’t need God(Rev. 3:17). Their study of the Scriptures is superficial, leaving them ill-equipped to navigate the challenges of daily life.

Moreover, lukewarm Christians may struggle to reconcile their faith with the world’s demands, compromising their values and convictions in the face of societal pressures. They may find themselves torn between the allure of worldly pleasures and the call to live a life of holiness, resulting in a constant state of internal conflict.

“For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. What the true proverb says has happened to them: The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.” (2 Peter 2:21)

The lukewarm Christian’s predicament is not merely a matter of personal struggle; it poses a significant threat to the overall health and vitality of the church. When believers fail to embrace their faith entirely, they become defenseless to spiritual stagnation, leaving them vulnerable to the enemy’s influence. 1 Peter 5:8 says:

“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

When we put our guard down and let our worldly desires take over our minds, we are easy prey to the enemy. Lukewarmness can lead to a diminished sense of purpose and a lack of meaningful impact on the world around them. These individuals may be unable to effectively share the gospel, as their faith lacks the conviction and passion to inspire and transform others.

Recognizing the dangers of lukewarmness is the first step towards a renewed and vibrant faith. However, overcoming this spiritual trouble requires a deliberate effort. Here are some practical steps that the lukewarm Christian can take to reignite the flame of devotion:

1. Engage in Consistent Prayer and Scripture Study (Matthew 26:41)

Developing a robust prayer life and a deep understanding of the Scriptures is essential for the lukewarm Christian. Set aside dedicated time each day to commune with God, pouring out your heart and seeking His guidance. Immerse yourself in the Word, allowing it to transform your mind and shape your worldview.

2. Cultivate a Vibrant Relationship with Christ (Proverbs 3:5-6)

At the heart of the lukewarm Christian’s struggle is a disconnect from the source of their faith – Jesus Christ. Intentionally seek to deepen your relationship with the Savior, engaging in worship, fellowship, and personal reflection. Allow the love and grace of Christ to permeate every aspect of your life, fueling your passion and commitment.

3. Embrace Accountability and Community (James 5:16)

Surround yourself with a community of believers who can encourage, challenge, and support you in your spiritual journey. Seek mentors and small groups to hold you accountable and provide a safe space for honest self-reflection and growth.

4. Serve with Passion and Purpose (Romans 12:11)

Discover your God-given gifts and talents, and use them to serve the body of Christ and the world around you. Engage in ministries and outreach opportunities that align with your passions, allowing your faith to find tangible expression and impact.

5. Confront Worldly Temptations and Compromise (James 4:7)

Identify the areas of your life where you have compromised your faith or succumbed to worldly temptations. Prayerfully address these issues, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the support of your community to overcome them.

In the Bible, the Great Commandment is a pivotal teaching attributed to Jesus Christ, encapsulating the essence of moral living and spiritual devotion. Found in the New Testament across the books of Matthew, Mark, and Luke:  

” …You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment… You shall love your neighbor as yourself…”(Matthew 22:37-40)

“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.”(Mark 12:30-31),

“And he answered, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27),

this commandment comprises two fundamental principles: loving God with all one’s heart, soul, and mind and loving one’s neighbor as oneself.

Rooted in Jesus’s teachings, the Great Commandment is a cornerstone of the Christian faith. It emphasizes the connection between our love for God and our love for humanity. Through this divine directive, believers are called to embody compassion, kindness, and selflessness in our relationships with God and fellow human beings.

The Bible underscores the importance of putting words into action by the principle that faith without works is dead.

“For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.” (James 2:26)

It teaches that genuine belief is demonstrated through words and tangible deeds that reflect one’s commitment to living out God’s teachings and commandments.

The Great Commandment, as found in the Bible, is a foundational teaching attributed to Jesus Christ. This commandment is explicitly found in the books of Matthew (22:37-40), Mark (12:30-31), and Luke (10:27). It underscores the importance of genuine love and compassion. Resulting as the guiding principles for moral conduct and spiritual devotion in the Christian faith. We see a similarity in each of these verses that tells us to love God with everything we have. As well as to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, and that there is no greater commandment than this. We will surely love our neighbor if we love God with all mind, soul, and strength.

First John 4:20 tells us:

“If anyone says, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”

This verse’s powerful and clear message should compel us to love God above all things. When we love God, we recognize that all things are through Him and that our love does not come from ourselves but from God. We are able to love our neighbor because “he first loved us”(1 John 4:19).

God has called us to share the gospel as an act of love for our neighbor. Missionary work is the live practice of love towards God and others in Indonesia. Missionaries have prioritized building solid relationships with local communities, from evangelizing to Indonesians and performing house visits to a simple prayer on the side of the road.

Engaging in acts of service and compassion, such as actively listening to the concerns and needs of the community members. As missionaries, we have tailored our efforts to address specific challenges and foster genuine connections. Through our commitment to embodying the Great Commandment in our actions, we can effectively spread love, hope, and faith in Indonesia.

Given Indonesia’s diverse cultural and religious landscape, there is substantial potential for further growth in Christian missionaries practicing the Great Commandment. As missionaries prioritize love and spiritual growth in their endeavors, they have a significant opportunity to contribute positively to the holistic development of Indonesian society.

By embracing the principles of the Great Commandment – loving God and loving one’s neighbor – individuals and communities can build bridges and overcome divisions. Every act of kindness, every gesture of empathy, and every display of love contributes to a ripple effect of positivity and unity. Through collective efforts fueled by genuine care and respect for one another, lasting change and transformation can be achieved. Let us continue to sow seeds of love, nurture relationships and strive toward a future where unity and compassion prevail.

As we reflect on the importance of practicing love in our communities, let us heed the call to action to be a part of the Great Commandment. Each one of us has the power to make a difference through simple acts of kindness, compassion, and understanding.

Richard Wurmbrand was a remarkable man whose life story is a testament to the power of resilience and commitment to serving others. As a Romanian pastor and founder of the international human rights organization, The Voice of the Martyrs, Wurmbrand’s life was marked by extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and a relentless pursuit of justice for those persecuted for their religious beliefs.

Wurmbrand was born in 1909 in Bucharest, Romania. During this time, a tumultuous political and social upheaval shaped Wurmbrand’s early life. As a young man, he was drawn to the ideologies of communism and atheism. He rejected the religious beliefs of his Jewish upbringing. However, an encounter with a carpenter would forever change the trajectory of his life.

In 1938, Wurmbrand and his wife encountered a Christian carpenter who shared the gospel with them. He even gave them a Bible for them to read. After reading it, they experienced a profound spiritual awakening. From that day forward, Wurmbrand and his wife dedicated their lives to serving God. As a result, they spread the message of Christ’s love and redemption.

Wurmbrand’s newfound faith would soon put him at odds with the oppressive communist regime that had taken control of Romania. As a pastor, he openly preached the gospel and advocated for religious freedom, actions viewed as a direct challenge to the government’s authority. In 1948, Wurmbrand was arrested and subjected to a series of brutal interrogations and torture sessions, all to force him to renounce his faith.

For the next 14 years, Wurmbrand endured the unimaginable horrors of communist prisons. In those prisons he experienced physical and psychological abuse, starvation, and solitary confinement. Despite the immense suffering he endured, Wurmbrand’s faith never wavered. He used his time in prison to minister to his fellow inmates. He shared the message of Christ’s love and offering hope in the darkest circumstances.

Escape and Founding of The Voice of the Martyrs

In 1964, Wurmbrand was released from prison and allowed to leave Romania. He and his wife, Sabina, were also imprisoned for their faith and fled to Norway and then to the United States, where they began to share their harrowing experiences with the world. During this time, Wurmbrand founded The Voice of the Martyrs. This was an organization dedicated to supporting and advocating for persecuted Christians around the globe. Through his tireless efforts, Wurmbrand brought international attention to the plight of believers suffering for their faith. He worked tirelessly to provide them with practical and spiritual support.

Wurmbrand’s life and work profoundly impacted the global Christian community and the broader human rights movement. His book, “Tortured for Christ,” which detailed his experiences in communist prisons, became a bestseller. It inspired countless individuals to take action in support of persecuted believers.

Throughout his life, Wurmbrand remained a passionate advocate for religious freedom and human rights, speaking out against the oppression of Christians and other religious minorities. He traveled extensively, sharing his message of hope and resilience and inspiring others to follow in his footsteps.

Today, The Voice of the Martyrs continues to carry on Wurmbrand’s legacy, providing aid and support to persecuted Christians in more than 60 countries worldwide. The organization’s work has helped to alleviate the suffering of countless individuals. It has played a crucial role in raising awareness about the ongoing persecution of religious minorities.

Richard Wurmbrand’s life story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of faith and the unwavering human spirit. Despite his immense suffering, he never lost sight of his calling to serve God and be a voice for the voiceless. During a recent trip to a very unreached area, we had the unique privilege of seeing someone accept Jesus as Savior and choose to get baptized. 

One woman in this area had previously heard the good news from our teammates and had chosen to believe at that time. This woman’s husband stated that he didn’t want to follow Christ, but he did allow her to keep her beliefs. Since then, she has continued in her faith and has been praying for her husband to believe. 

On the last day of our visit, the woman noticed our teammates and invited them to her home to talk. While there, they were able to share the good news with her husband. He usually left the room when they talked about Christ, but this time he stayed.

After listening to them share, he burst into tears and told them he wanted to believe. After praying, stating his desire to receive Jesus, the group told the husband the story of the Ethiopian Eunuch who chose to get baptized immediately (Acts 8:26-40). In response, the husband told them he, too, wanted to get baptized!

This family was so happy to be united under Christ. Praise God for His persistence in reaching the lost and answering the prayer of this man’s wife!

Ways to pray for this couple:

• Pray that this husband and wife maintain their faith in Jesus Christ.
• Pray that they are transformed daily by the Gospel.
• Pray they can share the Gospel and their experience with their family members and community.
• Pray that this couple may never give up in their new journey with Christ.

As we navigate life, it is easy to fall into the trap of striving endlessly for more accomplishments, recognition, and success. This relentless pursuit can leave us exhausted, overwhelmed, and spiritually depleted. Despite our best efforts, we find ourselves burdened by the weight of expectations, both external and internal, that drive us to do more and be better. 

Yet in this world that constantly demands more from us, where the pursuit of success and perfection often leaves us feeling weary and burdened, the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28-30 offer a welcome invitation. 

Jesus’ invitation to “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden“ speaks directly to that feeling of weariness we know all too well. Not only that, but this invitation is not only for a select few. He says it is for those who are tired, worn out, and carrying heavy burdens. Most of us find ourselves in one of those categories, do we not? 

One translation of this verse begins by saying, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me.” That last part addresses the weariness some of us can feel in our pursuit to perform for God, something we were never asked to do. God doesn’t want our performance; He wants our hearts. He wants us to come to Him.

It’s also worth noting the beauty in the first three words of this invitation. He doesn’t give us hurdles to jump over in order to receive or earn rest; He simply says, “Come to me.” His heart for us is so clear.

In this verse, we also see that Jesus doesn’t diminish what we’re walking through or shame us for how we feel. He acknowledges our struggles and offers Himself as the source of true rest and peace. In a world that often provides temporary solutions to our deep-seated needs, Jesus extends a timeless invitation to find lasting rest in Him.

When Jesus promises to give us rest, He is not offering a quick fix or temporary relief. His rest is a deep, soul-satisfying peace that transcends circumstances and surpasses understanding. It is a rest that comes from knowing Him intimately and trusting in His unfailing love.

Taking Jesus’ yoke upon us may seem counterintuitive in a culture that values independence and self-reliance. However, by taking His yoke upon us, we are choosing to align ourselves with Him, to walk in His ways, and to learn from His gentle and humble heart. In doing so, we find freedom from the burdens of trying to navigate life on our own strength.

Learning from Jesus involves more than acquiring knowledge; it is about cultivating a deep relationship with Him. As we study His life, teachings, and character, we begin to understand His heart for us and the world. In learning from Him, we discover a new way of showing up in the world that transforms our lives from the inside out.

In these verses, Jesus describes Himself as “gentle and lowly in heart.” This is quite a statement. The God of the universe, the King of kings, is gentle and lowly. He is not harsh, demanding, or overbearing but approachable and tender-hearted.

This means we can come to Jesus without fear or pretense. We don’t have to try to impress Him or earn His love. When we are weary and burdened, we can find refuge in His gentle presence.

Jesus promises that when we come to Him, take His yoke, and learn from Him, we “will find rest for [our] souls.” This rest is not just physical or emotional but a deep, spiritual rest. The rest Jesus offers is not dependent on our circumstances or performance.

It is a rest that comes from knowing we are loved, accepted, and cared for by our Heavenly Father. It is a rest that allows us to stop striving and simply abide in His presence.

• Make time each day to come to Jesus and cast your burdens upon Him. Pray, read scripture, and simply rest in His presence.

• Reflect on Jesus’ character as “gentle and lowly in heart.” Allow this truth to shape how you view God and approach Him.

• When you feel weary or overwhelmed, remember Jesus’ invitation to take His yoke upon you. Ask Him to teach and guide you in the unforced rhythms of grace.

• Share this message of rest and hope with others who are weary and burdened. Invite them to experience the freedom and peace found in Jesus.

The words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28-30 offer a beautiful invitation to find true rest for our souls. By coming to Him, we can discover the peace and freedom that our weary hearts long for.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)

From the very beginning, God’s presence is evident. As God created man in His image, He did so with the intention of fellowship. Genesis 3:8 describes God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, seeking Adam and Eve.

This intimate picture of God desiring to be with His creation sets the stage for the rest of scripture. Let’s look at some passages in both the New and Old Testament that show God coming after us and promising His presence.

Exodus 33:14

“My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

This promise was given to the Israelites during a time of uncertainty and transition. They were journeying through the wilderness, and Moses sought assurance that God would not abandon them. God’s response was clear and comforting: He would be with them, providing rest and peace.

Joshua 1:9

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

As Joshua prepared to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land, he needed courage and strength. God’s promise of His presence was the foundation of Joshua’s confidence. Why did Joshua not need to be afraid? Why could he be strong and courageous? Because God would be with him wherever he went. 

Psalm 46:1-2

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea…”

In times of trouble, we can turn to God for strength. When we face difficulties, we can run to God and find refuge in His presence. In light of God’s presence, verse two then draws the conclusion, “Therefore we will not fear…”  Even when everything else is unstable, we can find stability in Him. Knowing God’s presence in the midst of trials and unknowns casts out fear.

Psalm 139:7-10

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”

These verses remind us that there is no place we can go where God is not present. This truth provides immense comfort, knowing we are never out of God’s reach.

Zephaniah 3:17

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”

This verse challenges many of our wrong ideas about God. Often, we think of Him as being with us reluctantly. Yet this verse reflects a God who delights in being with us, a God who quiets our fears with His love. 

Matthew 1:23

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us).”

The name Immanuel, meaning “God with us,” once again points to God’s pursuit of us. This promise of God’s presence is fulfilled in Jesus, who came to dwell among us.

1 Corinthians 3:16

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”

This verse highlights our intimate relationship with God through the Holy Spirit. As believers, we are God’s temple, and His Spirit dwells within us, ensuring His constant presence.

Matthew 28:19-20

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

As Jesus prepared to ascend to heaven, He commissioned His followers to make disciples and assured them that His presence would remain with them. This promise extends to us today. As we seek to share the good news, Jesus is with us. We are never alone.

John 14:16-17

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”

Jesus promises the Holy Spirit to His followers, who will be with us forever. The Holy Spirit’s presence within us is a testament to God’s continual presence and guidance.

Revelation 21:3

“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.'”

This verse points to the future when God’s presence will be fully realized among His people. It is a promise of eternal communion with God, where we will experience His presence in its fullness. This hope encourages us to persevere, knowing that one day, we will dwell with God forever.

The promise of God’s presence is a profound and comforting truth that we can hold onto in every season of life. As we meditate on these scriptures, let us be encouraged and strengthened by the knowledge that we are never alone.

May we, like David, come to say, “In your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11).

In a world where walking in a way that honors God feels increasingly like swimming upstream, we can find encouragement and strength in the words of 1 Corinthians 10:13: 

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

Let’s take a closer look and reflect on each claim made in this verse:

• “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man”: This reassures us that we are not alone in our struggles. Whatever the temptation is that we might experience, someone else has experienced it as well.
• “God is faithful”: Amidst our trials, we can find comfort in the unwavering faithfulness of God. He remains steadfast in His promises and is our ever-present help in challenging times.
• “He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability”: God knows our limits and capabilities better than anyone else. He ensures that we are never faced with temptations that exceed what we can resist with His help.
• “He will also provide the way of escape”: Even in the darkest moments of temptation, God offers us a way out. He equips us with the strength and wisdom to resist temptation and choose the path of righteousness.
• “That you may be able to endure it”: Through His grace and by the power of His Spirit, we are empowered to withstand temptations. He helps us endure.

As we navigate the complexities of life, especially in a world filled with distractions and temptations, it is crucial to anchor ourselves in the promises of God. Here are some practical ways to find strength in overcoming temptation:

1. Prayerful Reflection: Galatians 5:25 reminds us, “If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” Take time daily to reflect on Scripture, meditate on God’s Word, and seek His guidance through prayer. 
2. Community Support: Surround yourself with like-minded believers who can offer encouragement, accountability, and prayer support. We aren’t made to live in isolation, but to experience the beauty and strength found in community with others.
3. Scriptural Memorization: Equip yourself with key verses like 1 Corinthians 10:13 that serve as anchors in moments of temptation. By internalizing God’s Word, you empower yourself to combat temptation with truth.
4. Mindful Choices: Be intentional about the media you consume, the company you keep, and the activities you engage in. It has been said that you become what you pay attention to. As Colossians 3 says, “Set your minds on things above, not on things that are on earth.” 
5. Seeking Help: Don’t hesitate to reach out for help when needed. Whether through pastoral counseling, mentorship, or professional guidance, seeking support demonstrates humility and is a great way to fight temptation and bring struggles into the light.

In times of temptation, let us hold fast to the promise of 1 Corinthians 10:13. Let us remember that God’s faithfulness endures forever and that He’s ready to provide us with the strength and resilience needed to fight temptation.

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13

Thank you, God, for this promise in Your word. Thank you that because of Christ, You never turn away from us but are faithful to help us and empower us in moments of temptation. God, today we pray for leaders in the church in Indonesia. We know the enemy wants to distract and isolate those caring for Your bride. When temptation comes, give them strength to run to You. We pray for their protection and endurance in pursuing lives that honor You. Amen.

God is at work in powerful ways! This month, we’ve seen three individuals living in Bali who are open to the good news through our media work. One of these individuals is Mila, a 54-year-old widow who has recently had dreams and visions of a man in white.

Mila said she was of Hindu belief but was very interested in knowing Jesus. “Every time I lay my head down or sit down to rest, I see someone in white clothing. One day, I had a dream that three people were standing near me, and when I woke up and took my phone to look at social media, I kept seeing prayers and words about Jesus.”

“What does this all mean?” asked Mila. Our media ministry national partner, Yudi, shared the gospel with Mila and led her through a prayer confessing her desire to follow Jesus. Mila said she was brought to tears after reading the prayer.

A few days later, our friends in Bali followed up with Mila and met her and her boyfriend in person. Mila shared that her daughter was also interested in knowing about Jesus. God is at work in hearts in Indonesia!

Ways to pray for Mila:

• Pray that Mila will be the door of salvation to her family and community.
• Pray that she may also grow in her faith in Jesus Christ.
• Pray that everyone around her can see the light that Christ has brought to her life.
• Pray that God may always protect her and her family.

Few names in Christian history stand as towering examples of faith and prayer as George Müller. His life, marked by unwavering trust in God and a profound commitment to prayer, continues to inspire believers around the world. Born in 1805 in Prussia, Müller’s journey from a life of sin to a life of service is a testament to the transformative power of the gospel.

Müller’s early years were far from exemplary. By the age of ten, he was already stealing money from his father, and his teenage years were characterized by deceit, theft, and gambling. His mother passed away when he was fourteen, and on the night of her death, Müller was out drinking and playing cards.

Despite his enrollment in the University of Halle to study divinity, his life was marked by what he described as “wicked behavior and an unrepentant spirit.”

The turning point in Müller’s life came in 1825 when he attended a prayer meeting. This meeting profoundly moved him, sparking a transformation that would define the rest of his life. Müller later reflected, “I have no doubt … that He began a work of grace in me. Even though I scarcely had any knowledge of who God truly was, that evening was the turning point in my life”. This encounter with God ignited a passion for prayer. 

Resolved to live a life wholly dependent on God’s guidance and provision, he made it a daily practice to bring his needs and those of others before the Lord. This habit would become the foundation upon which his life’s work was built.

In 1834, Müller embarked on a journey that would test his faith in ways he could never have imagined. Burdened by the plight of orphans in Bristol, England, he established an orphanage, but with a unique twist – he vowed never to ask anyone for financial support. Instead, he would rely solely on God’s provision through prayer.

From the outset, Müller’s endeavor was met with skepticism and doubt. How could a man with no financial resources or backing hope to undertake such a monumental task? Yet, Müller remained steadfast in his conviction. He believed that if God had called him to this work, then God would provide for every need. And provide He did, in ways that defied human logic.

Through the years, Müller witnessed countless miracles as God faithfully supplied the resources needed to care for the orphans. From food and clothing to shelter and education, every need was met through prayer and the generosity of God’s people. Müller’s unwavering trust in the Lord’s provision became a living testimony to the world, inspiring countless individuals to deepen their own prayer lives and trust in God.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Müller’s prayer life was his commitment to recording every answered prayer. Over the course of his life, he documented more than 50,000 specific answers to prayer, a staggering number that serves as a powerful reminder of God’s attentiveness to the cries of His children. Müller’s life was a living example of the truth found in Philippians 4:19: “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

One notable instance of God’s provision occurred when the orphanage had no food. As they gathered for their morning meal, the cupboards were bare, and there was no apparent means of obtaining provisions. Undeterred, Müller led the children in prayer, trusting that God would provide. Remarkably, as they were praying, a knock came at the door. A baker stood there, explaining that he had been unable to sleep the previous night and felt compelled to bake bread for the orphanage. Shortly after, a second knock revealed a farmer arrived with a cart full of milk, having felt an inexplicable urge to share his surplus with the orphanage.

In another instance, Müller found himself in need of a substantial sum of money to cover the orphanage’s expenses. With unwavering faith, he prayed, and within a few days, an anonymous donor sent a letter containing the exact amount needed, down to the last penny.

Another remarkable story from his travels involves a journey to Quebec. Müller’s ship encountered thick fog, and the captain informed him that they would not be able to reach their destination on time. Müller requested to pray in the chart room, and after a simple prayer, he assured the captain that the fog would lift. When they returned to the deck, the fog had indeed cleared, allowing Müller to keep his appointment. The captain, deeply moved by this experience, became a Christian shortly afterward.

Over the course of his life, he received and disbursed over $7 million (equivalent to billions in today’s currency) for the care of orphans and the spread of the gospel, all without ever asking for donations or going into debt.

In a world that often values self-reliance and human effort, George Müller’s life is a powerful reminder of what God can accomplish through a person wholly devoted to Him. He believed that prayer was not a last resort but the first and most powerful resource available to believers. Through his unwavering trust and reliance on God, he not only cared for thousands of orphaned children but also inspired generations of believers to cultivate a deeper relationship with God through prayer.

His story encourages us to trust in God’s provision, commit ourselves to prayer, and live lives of service and compassion. As we reflect on Müller’s legacy, may we be inspired to deepen our own faith and seek God’s guidance in every aspect of our lives. Let us remember that, like Müller, we serve a God who hears and answers prayers and who can use our lives to bring about His purposes in the world.

Müller’s life was a living illustration of the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” His story reminds us that when we surrender our lives to the Lord and seek His will through prayer, we can trust Him to provide.
