In Acts 2:42-47, we witness a beautiful picture of various characteristics of the early church. Let’s take a look at the passage to identify some critical components of a healthy church and consider where our own communities could use some encouragement.
First, let’s take a look at the passage:

The first mark of the early church was their unwavering commitment to the apostles’ teaching. They eagerly absorbed the Word of God, allowing it to shape their beliefs, values, and actions.
As we reflect on this, may we also prioritize being in the Word individually and as a body.

The early believers were devoted not only to doctrine but also to fellowship. They shared their lives, supporting and encouraging one another.
In a culture experiencing a loneliness epidemic, let us swim upstream by cultivating authentic, vulnerable relationships and choosing to include one another in our daily lives.

Both gathering together for meals and Communion likely held deep significance for the early church. They were faithful to remember the sacrifice of Christ and celebrate their shared identity as members of His body.
Let us not neglect to take the Lord’s Supper, recognizing the precious opportunity to reflect on the cross individually and communally.

The early church devoted themselves to prayer. This is made clear in other passages in Acts when they pray for boldness, for wisdom in making decisions, for those in danger, and as an act of worship.
Would the same be said about our communities? Let’s allow their example to spur us on.

The believers in Acts 2 demonstrated remarkable generosity by sharing their possessions with those in need. Their selflessness and compassion reflected the love of Christ at work within them.
May we remember Jesus’ words: “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).

This section of scripture appropriately concludes by saying that “the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” As the early church devoted themselves to loving God and loving others, many were being saved.
It was the natural overflow of the way they lived. They weren’t neglecting the other elements of a healthy church merely to increase their numbers, but they bore much fruit as they were faithful to abide in Christ and live faithfully in community.

As they devoted themselves to God and to loving those around them, the early church saw God work in miraculous ways. With that in mind, let’s remember, both individually and as a body, Jesus’ words in John 15:5.

Even as you pray for your own community, join us in praying for the church in Indonesia:
“…And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” – Acts 2:47
God, today we lift up the church in Indonesia. We pray that their devotion to You, to Your word, and to loving others would lead to many seeing Your power on display. We pray that just as we see in this passage, many would be saved, day by day, in communities across the nation.
