Although Indonesia is almost 90% Muslim, there are many established churches throughout the country. Most of these churches are found in big cities and the eastern islands. The national government provides rights for these churches, but there is still often persecution from the community. Here are some ways to pray for churches in Indonesia:
Pray for God’s Word to be accessible and taught in the churches.
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
For churches to remain healthy, they must be based on the foundation of Scripture. Most established churches have access to scripture in their language, but not every house church does. With over 700 languages in Indonesia, there are still many without a Bible translation. In addition to having accessible Scripture, it is important that the Holy Spirit is present to guide leaders in sound teaching.
Pray for unity among churches.
“All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.” Acts 4:23
Unity among believers is vital for the Kingdom of God to grow and thrive. A unified church body is a great picture to others of what the Kingdom is about. This is not only true for established churches, but also for house churches. Some Indonesian churches misunderstand house church movements and want to change what is happening. Occasionally an established church has wanted house churches to conform more to a “traditional” format (not like the churches seen in Acts). Though this is great in some situations, in others that is not a feasible option. Since it results with persecution and other limitations (job, family, etc).
Pray for protection from persecution.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:10
Persecution is a daily reality for believers in Indonesia, from isolation in the community to bombings of churches. Often believers are timid to share with those around them for fear of messing up the current status quo of peace. This means when churches do outreach, they often focus on other communities of believers, like impoverished communities in the eastern islands. There are still many churches with a heart for community outreach.
Pray for an outward focus.
“At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ.” Colossians 4:3
Pray that churches would look outward to their communities. The local church can serve to meet physical needs in addition to pointing others to the One who meets spiritual needs. God can use His Church in mighty ways in Indonesia.
