Born in Virginia into a privileged family on December 12, 1840, Lottie was blessed with a brilliant mind and a gift for languages. After her father died, she spent many of her years at a boarding school where students were required to attend daily chapel service. Yet, despite her many talents and opportunities, she initially harbored doubts about Christianity during her youth. There were times when she was pretty vocal about this and was known as a bit of a troublemaker.

However, a spiritual awakening occurred when she attended an evangelistic meeting led by Baptist preacher John Broadus. This pivotal moment led to a profound transformation in Moon’s life, culminating in her public profession of faith in Jesus on December 21, 1858. This marked the beginning of her journey of faith and calling to serve as a missionary, setting the stage for her impactful work in China and beyond.

Lottie’s calling led her to China in 1873, where she immersed herself fully in the culture to spread the Good News despite facing numerous challenges.  She traveled extensively around Shandong province to reach the most remote villages, her heart burning to share the love of Christ. But Lottie’s impact went far beyond preaching; she established schools for young girls, vehemently opposed the practice of foot-binding, and visited countless homes to teach the Scriptures.

Her passionate letters back to the U.S. urged for more support and workers to continue the mission, stirring many to greater obedience to the Great Commission. Moon’s sacrificial life and relentless efforts helped sow the seeds of revival in Pingdu and other parts of Shandong, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to impact Chinese communities to this day.

Lottie Moon’s commitment to her mission was unwavering. Despite facing numerous challenges, including poverty, illness, and political unrest, she remained steadfast in her resolve to bring hope and salvation to those in need. Her selfless acts of service reflected the very heart of Christ, endearing her to the Chinese community. She was a woman consumed by love for God and love for others.

Lottie Moon’s impact extended far beyond her lifetime. Her advocacy for women’s rights, education, and social reform left an indelible mark on Chinese society. As believers, we have the opportunity to embrace a faith that is bold and transformative. Acts 1:8 serves as an inspiring reminder of the power that is available to us through the Holy Spirit.

In this article, we will take a closer look a this passage that encourages us to step out with confidence, knowing that we are called to be vessels of God’s strength and purpose.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” – Acts 1:8 

Firstly, God has given us a divine call in our walk with Christ. Jesus’ words before His ascension are not mere suggestions but a mandate for every believer. The Lord calls us to receive power, not for our own glory, but to be witnesses of Christ’s love and salvation. This power ought to move us into action in our communities, cities, and beyond. He calls us to be witnesses of Him, living testimonies of how the gospel sets people free to know and love God.

Radical faith is not comfortable or convenient; it requires stepping out of our comfort zones and trusting in God’s provision. It’s about believing in the impossible, knowing that all things are possible with God. As we step out in faith, we open ourselves up to opportunities to see the Holy Spirit move in power. Not only that, but this passionate, willing-to-do-anything faith opens the door to knowing God more intimately.

As we seek to walk in the power of the Spirit, we see that the Holy Spirit is not a distant force but an ever-present help. He empowers us to speak boldly, love unconditionally, and impact lives for eternity. As we yield to His leading, miracles happen, hearts transform, and lives change forever.

To put it simply, He can do things through us that we could never achieve on our own!  Let’s not forget that the power described in Acts 1:8 is not only for first-century Christians, but is for us. He is among us now, moving in power, and leading us to be His witnesses. 

The mission outlined in Acts 1:8 is both local and global. The Lord has called us to be witnesses in our immediate surroundings – our Jerusalem – reaching out to our families, friends, and neighbors with the message of hope.

But our mission does not stop there; we are also called to go beyond borders, to share the gospel in all Judea and Samaria, and ultimately to the ends of the earth.  But how do we cultivate this desire for the lost?

Living a life on mission looks like being intentional about sharing the love of Christ wherever we go. It means seeing every interaction as an opportunity to point others to Jesus. Whether it’s through acts of kindness, words of encouragement, or simply being present for someone in need, we create opportunities for further spiritual conversation when we live as Christ’s hands and feet in a broken world.

As we reflect on Acts 1:8 and its implications for our lives, let’s be inspired to walk in the fullness of the power of the Holy Spirit. Let’s go forward with courage and conviction, knowing that we are called to be witnesses of Christ’s love to a world in desperate need.
