As we navigate life, it is easy to fall into the trap of striving endlessly for more accomplishments, recognition, and success. This relentless pursuit can leave us exhausted, overwhelmed, and spiritually depleted. Despite our best efforts, we find ourselves burdened by the weight of expectations, both external and internal, that drive us to do more and be better.

Yet in this world that constantly demands more from us, where the pursuit of success and perfection often leaves us feeling weary and burdened, the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28-30 offer a welcome invitation.

Jesus’ invitation to “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden“ speaks directly to that feeling of weariness we know all too well. Not only that, but this invitation is not only for a select few. He says it is for those who are tired, worn out, and carrying heavy burdens. Most of us find ourselves in one of those categories, do we not?

One translation of this verse begins by saying, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me.” That last part addresses the weariness some of us can feel in our pursuit to perform for God, something we were never asked to do. God doesn’t want our performance; He wants our hearts. He wants us to come to Him.

It’s also worth noting the beauty in the first three words of this invitation. He doesn’t give us hurdles to jump over in order to receive or earn rest; He simply says, “Come to me.” His heart for us is so clear.

In this verse, we also see that Jesus doesn’t diminish what we’re walking through or shame us for how we feel. He acknowledges our struggles and offers Himself as the source of true rest and peace. In a world that often provides temporary solutions to our deep-seated needs, Jesus extends a timeless invitation to find lasting rest in Him.

When Jesus promises to give us rest, He is not offering a quick fix or temporary relief. His rest is a deep, soul-satisfying peace that transcends circumstances and surpasses understanding. It is a rest that comes from knowing Him intimately and trusting in His unfailing love.

Taking Jesus’ yoke upon us may seem counterintuitive in a culture that values independence and self-reliance. However, by taking His yoke upon us, we are choosing to align ourselves with Him, to walk in His ways, and to learn from His gentle and humble heart. In doing so, we find freedom from the burdens of trying to navigate life on our own strength.

Learning from Jesus involves more than acquiring knowledge; it is about cultivating a deep relationship with Him. As we study His life, teachings, and character, we begin to understand His heart for us and the world. In learning from Him, we discover a new way of showing up in the world that transforms our lives from the inside out.

In these verses, Jesus describes Himself as “gentle and lowly in heart.” This is quite a statement. The God of the universe, the King of kings, is gentle and lowly. He is not harsh, demanding, or overbearing but approachable and tender-hearted.

This means we can come to Jesus without fear or pretense. We don’t have to try to impress Him or earn His love. When we are weary and burdened, we can find refuge in His gentle presence.

Jesus promises that when we come to Him, take His yoke, and learn from Him, we “will find rest for [our] souls.” This rest is not just physical or emotional but a deep, spiritual rest. The rest Jesus offers is not dependent on our circumstances or performance.

It is a rest that comes from knowing we are loved, accepted, and cared for by our Heavenly Father. It is a rest that allows us to stop striving and simply abide in His presence.

To fully grasp the weight of Jesus’ words, we must first understand the context of His own sending. The apostle John introduces us to this concept in the opening verses of his gospel, declaring, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). The eternal Son of God, co-equal and co-eternal with the Father, willingly took on human form, entering our broken world to reconcile us to God.

Jesus was sent on a mission to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10). He said He came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). From the manger to the cross, His every step was marked by obedience to the Father’s will, culminating in His sacrificial death and glorious resurrection.

“Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.'” – John 20:21

Just as the Father sent the Son, so the Son sends His disciples. This idea, that followers of Jesus are “sent ones,” is clear in many places throughout Scripture.

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 articulates this well:

“All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”

We are called to be ambassadors of Christ, representatives of His kingdom with The Good News that has the power to transform lives and nations.

Yet, this sending is not a solitary endeavor. Jesus promises the gift of the Holy Spirit, the very presence of God within us, empowering us to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8). We are not sent alone but in the strength and guidance of the Spirit, who equips us for the task at hand.

The scope of our sending is vast, encompassing every tribe, tongue, and nation. Just as the Father sent the Son to redeem a fallen world, so we are sent to proclaim the message of salvation to every people group. Our mission field extends beyond the walls of our churches and into our families, workplaces, and communities.

We are called to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16), agents of transformation in a world that desperately needs the hope and healing found in Christ. Our words and actions should bear witness to The Gospel, inviting others to experience the love and grace that have so profoundly impacted our own lives.

Yet, even as we acknowledge the weight of our calling, we must remember that we do not go forth in our own strength. Jesus, the one who sends us, is also the one who empowers us. He promises to be with us always (Matthew 28:20). Moreover, He promises us the Holy Spirit to empower us to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8). We are not sent alone but in the strength and guidance of the Spirit, who equips us for the task at hand.

When we feel weak or lacking, we can find encouragement from the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 2:1-5.

“And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”

As we surrender ourselves fully to His leading, we can expect to see the manifestation of His power, not our own.

The message we carry as ambassadors of Christ is one of hope and grace. It is The Good News that sin and death have been conquered, that the chains of bondage have been broken, and that a new life, abundant and eternal, is available to all who embrace the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ.

This message is not merely a set of doctrines or a philosophical construct; it is a living, breathing reality that has the power to change lives. As ambassadors, we are invited to proclaim this message with boldness and conviction, allowing the Holy Spirit to work through us to touch hearts and minds, bringing healing, restoration, and reconciliation.

As we embrace our role as ambassadors of Christ, we can take comfort in the promise of His abiding presence. Jesus assured His disciples, “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). This promise extends to us, His modern-day ambassadors, reminding us that we are never alone in our mission.

The Holy Spirit, the very presence of God within us, empowers us, guides us, and sustains us in our journey. It is through His strength that we can overcome obstacles, persevere in the face of opposition, and remain steadfast in our commitment to representing Christ faithfully.

Beloved, as we reflect on Jesus’ words in John 20:21, may we be gripped by the weight and wonder of our calling. We are not mere spectators in the grand narrative of redemption; we are active participants, sent forth by the risen Savior to be His ambassadors in a world that desperately needs the hope found in Christ alone.

The post From Jesus to Us: Embracing Our Role as His Ambassadors (John 20:21) first appeared on Pray For Indonesia.

“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” – John 10:9 (ESV)

What an incredible invitation. An invitation, through Jesus alone, to salvation, security, and life abundant. Let’s examine the powerful truths in this passage as we consider the beautiful invitation offered by Jesus, our door.

Jesus proclaims, “I am the door.” As He does in other passages, Jesus is making a bold claim. He is not merely a way but the way to eternal life. Through Him alone, we find forgiveness, redemption, and reconciliation with God. As we step through this door of salvation, we are embraced by His grace, enveloped in His love, and set free from the bondage of sin.

Our works or abilities are not what earn our right to walk through the door. It is simply the invitation extended by the One who “came not to call not the righteous, but sinners” (Mark 2:17). It is through Jesus alone that we can experience abundant life and enter into a relationship with the Father.

In the time of Jesus, shepherds would sometimes create an enclosure and stay at the opening to serve as a gate for the sheep, knowing when to keep them safe inside the enclosure and when to allow them to go out into the pasture.

In the same way, Christ declares Himself to be “the door” and paints a picture of a good shepherd who both brings His sheep out to find pasture and keeps them in to protect them. In our coming and going, Christ is with us. While Jesus is clear that in this world we will have trouble, our good shepherd assures us of His constant presence and guidance.

Beyond the threshold of Jesus lies abundant life. He promises that those who enter through Him will go in and out and find pasture. This imagery speaks of freedom, provision, and peace. While the world leaves us tirelessly chasing after “more” to be satisfied, Jesus gently shows us another way. He invites us to Himself. In Christ, we discover fulfillment for our deepest longings, peace for our souls, and purpose for our days.

He leads us to green pastures where our spirits are refreshed, our hearts are satisfied, and our lives bear fruit that glorifies Him. Again, this doesn’t necessarily mean abundance in a worldly sense but a life of abundance because we know communion with Him. As Elisabeth Elliot said, “The secret is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances.”

As we reflect on John 10:7-10, let us respond to Jesus’ invitation to come to Him, our door. Let us continually lay our fears, doubts, and shortcomings at His feet and step boldly into the abundant life He offers by grace. As we do, may we trust His guidance, rely on His protection, and rest in His provision.

Remember, Jesus is not just a door among many; He is the door to salvation, true rest, and abundant life. Through Him, we find hope in despair, light in darkness, and purpose in chaos.

Join us in praying for those in Indonesia who have yet to hear about this hope found in Christ. Pray they would come to Jesus, the door to salvation, and know Him as their good shepherd.

As followers of Christ, we often find ourselves in the midst of life’s storms, facing circumstances that challenge our faith and leave us asking, “Jesus, do you care?” The disciples in Mark 4:35-41 found themselves in a similar situation, and their experience can provide us with much-needed comfort and reassurance.

The passage begins with Jesus and his disciples setting out on a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee. As they journeyed, a great windstorm arose, and the waves began to crash into the ship, threatening to capsize it. Amid this chaos, the disciples turned to Jesus, sleeping peacefully in the stern of the boat. Their cries of desperation reveal the depth of their fear and the surfacing of their doubt: “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

Isn’t the cry of our hearts the same as that of the disciples? This question, “Jesus, do you care?” is one that many of us have asked during our storms. Most of the time, we can keep that question hidden in our hearts. Yet when life is bumpy and hard, that hidden question surfaces. While that may make us uncomfortable, it doesn’t make Jesus uncomfortable.

Jesus’ response in this passage is a powerful reminder of his unwavering care and concern for His followers. He immediately “rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’” and the storm ceased, demonstrating His authority over nature. His response to His disciples is also challenging. After calming the storm, He turns to His disciples and asks, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40).

In this moment, Jesus is not only calming the physical storm but also addressing the spiritual storm within the hearts of His followers. He cares too deeply for them to let that question, “Jesus, do you care?” remain hidden in their hearts.

God knew the hidden questions in the disciples’ hearts on that day, and He knows the hidden questions in our hearts, too. Just as He cared to address the doubt in the disciples’ hearts, God cares to address the doubts in our own hearts. In this way, the storms we face can be turned for good. God can use the hard things we go through to surface and address the various doubts and lies lodged in our hearts. He cares too much about us to let them stay there.

In response to their question, the disciples know more of Jesus’ presence and power. “Who is this, that even the wind and the waves obey him?” they ask. In our own storms, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, we have the opportunity to behold more of our King as we bring our questions to God.

The story of Jesus calming the storm in Mark 4:35-41 is a powerful reminder that we can find comfort in knowing that Jesus cares for us. When the storms of life threaten to overwhelm us, we don’t have to be afraid. We can trust that we will know more of His presence and power as we cry out to Him.

“By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.” (1 John 3:16)

As we reflect on the words of the apostle John, we are confronted with the ultimate expression of love – the sacrificial act of Jesus laying down his life for us. John’s words echo Jesus’ own words:

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

If ever we question Jesus’ love for us, we can look to the cross.

In the midst of a world that often confuses and distorts the meaning of love, the apostle John provides us with a clear and unwavering definition. “By this we know love,” he declares, “that he laid down his life for us.”

When we gaze upon the cross, we see the ultimate demonstration of love. The Son of God, the eternal Word, the King of kings, willingly laid down his life to redeem us. He freed us from the bondage of sin and death. He took upon himself the punishment we deserved, enduring the wrath of God so that we may be forgiven and reconciled to the Father. This is the love that defines us, the love that transforms us, and the love that compels us to respond in kind.

While we are all too familiar with love that is dependent on our performance or love that is only applied to a certain degree, the cross shows us what true, unconditional love is. Jesus held nothing back and required nothing from us in order to receive His love. As Ephesians 2:8-9 says:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

But the message of 1 John 3:16 does not stop there. John goes on to say, “And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.” In other words, the love that Christ has shown us is not merely to be admired but to be imitated. We are called to follow in the footsteps of our Savior, to lay down our own lives for the sake of others.

This is a challenging and often uncomfortable call, for it requires us to die to ourselves, to put the needs of others before our own. It means sacrificing our time, our resources, our comfort, and even our very lives, if necessary, to serve and love those around us. It is a call to a radical and selfless love, a love that mirrors the love of Christ.

As we embrace this call to lay down our lives for others, we discover that our love becomes a powerful witness to the world. For it is through our love for one another, and even for our enemies, that the world will know that we are disciples of Christ (John 13:35). Our love becomes the tangible expression of our new selves, hidden in Christ.

When we love as Christ loved, when we are willing to sacrifice ourselves for the sake of others, we open the door for the Holy Spirit to work in the hearts of those around us. Our love becomes a means by which others may come to know the love of God.

If we think back on our own lives, certain people come to mind when thinking of those whom God used to display the sacrificial love of Christ. Their lives were different, and we noticed. Their eyes and hearts for people were different, and we noticed. May that spur us on to be Jesus’ hands and feet in the places He has us. May the daily reminder of the gospel compel us to love and live in a sacrificial way in hopes that people will see the love of Christ on display.

“God, help us to truly know the depth of your love, as demonstrated through the sacrifice of your Son. May we be empowered by your Spirit to follow in the footsteps of Christ, laying down our lives for the sake of others. Use our love as a powerful witness to the world that many may come to know and follow You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
