“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” — Matthew 5:10-12 (ESV)

Despite the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom in Indonesia, the reality for many Christians is one of hardship and danger. This article seeks to shed light on the voices of the faithful who, in the face of severe persecution, stood firm in their faith.

Martyrdom is not something Christians are called to seek actively. Instead, it is a path that some may be called to walk as a testament to their unwavering faith. Jesus instructed His followers, “When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next” (Matthew 10:23), emphasizing the importance of preserving life while remaining steadfast in faith.

The early Christians often fled from persecution, taking necessary precautions for survival (Acts 8:1; 9:25, 30; 14:6; 17:10, 14). However, their faithfulness became a powerful witness to the world when faced with the ultimate sacrifice.

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, has seen its share of Christian persecution. Christians in Indonesia have faced significant challenges, including violence and discrimination. The stories of those who have laid down their lives for their faith in Indonesia are a testament to their unwavering commitment to Christ.

Quiet Martyrs

For security reasons and in an effort to protect the other believers in their area, a large number of Indonesian martyrs are not known by name. Yet the number of believers who have been killed for choosing to follow Jesus in Indonesia is no small number. The fact that so many can be killed for their faith across Indonesia without it making the news reflects that those stories are, tragically, not uncommon.

The Poso Conflict

One of the most notable instances of Christian persecution in Indonesia occurred during the Poso conflict in Central Sulawesi. Between 1998 and 2001, religious tensions between Christians and Muslims escalated into violent clashes. Many Christians were killed, churches were burned, and entire communities were displaced. The conflict claimed the lives of numerous believers who stood firm in their faith despite the threat of death.

The Martyrdom of Three Christian Schoolgirls

In 2005, three Christian schoolgirls, Theresia Morangke, Alfita Poliwo, and Yarni Sambue, were brutally murdered by Islamic extremists in Poso. The girls were on their way to school when they were attacked and beheaded. Their deaths shocked the nation and the international community, highlighting the severe persecution faced by Christians in certain regions of Indonesia.

The Surabaya Church Bombings

On May 13, 2018, a series of coordinated suicide bombings targeted three churches in Surabaya, East Java. The attacks, carried out by a family of Islamic extremists, resulted in the deaths of over a dozen people and injured dozens more. The victims included men, women, and children who had gathered for Sunday worship.

The Attack on Lembantongoa

In November 2020, the Christian-majority village of Lembantongoa in Sulawesi was attacked by Islamist militants. The village elder and three other Christian farmers were brutally killed, and a Salvation Army church along with six houses were burned down, forcing about 750 villagers to flee their homes.

The stories of Christian martyrs in Indonesia remind us of the cost of discipleship and the call to remain faithful even unto death. As believers, we are encouraged to “present [our] bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God” (Romans 12:1). The apostle Paul reminds us that “all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12). Yet, we are also assured that “if we endure, we will also reign with him” (2 Timothy 2:12).

In the face of persecution, we are called to stand firm in our faith, knowing that our suffering is not in vain. As we reflect on the stories of Christian martyrs in Indonesia, let us be moved to prayer.

Pray for the families of those who have lost loved ones, that they may find comfort and strength in Christ.

Pray for the persecuted church in Indonesia, that believers may remain steadfast in their faith and be a light in the darkness.

Pray for the perpetrators of violence, that their hearts may be transformed by the love of Christ.

May the voices of the faithful in Indonesia continue to inspire and challenge us to live boldly for Christ, no matter the cost.

The post Voices of the Faithful: Christian Martyrs in Indonesia first appeared on Pray For Indonesia.

Around the world, our brothers and sisters in Christ are experiencing persecution for their faith. Indonesia is no exception. As believers, it is crucial to understand the reality of what many believers around the world are enduring in order to fervently pray for their endurance and faith.

Indonesia is home to the largest Muslim population in the world, with nearly 242 million Muslims residing within its borders. Despite its constitutional commitment to religious freedom, the nation’s Christian minority faces significant challenges. The Pew Research Center highlights that while Indonesia promotes religious pluralism, it simultaneously imposes restrictions that disproportionately affect religious minorities, often favoring Islam in its policies and practices.

For instance, the construction of new churches is fraught with bureaucratic hurdles. It often requires the consent of local Muslim communities, which can be challenging to obtain. This has led to numerous instances of churches being shuttered or demolished, leaving congregations without a place to worship.

Christian persecution in Indonesia manifests in various forms, from legal restrictions to social ostracism and outright violence. The anti-blasphemy laws are a significant tool of oppression, often used to silence Christians and other religious minorities. These laws have led to the imprisonment of individuals like Apollinaris Darmawan, who was jailed for allegedly violating these stringent regulations.

In regions like Aceh, governed by Sharia law, the pressure on Christians is particularly intense, with converts from Islam facing severe repercussions, including violence and social exclusion. Additionally, converts from Islam endure intense pressure to renounce their new faith.

Christians in Aceh face severe persecution and denial of their right to worship. Despite comprising a tiny minority, their churches have been repeatedly attacked, burned down, and demolished by authorities under the pretext of lacking permits. In 2015 alone, many churches were burned down, while authorities demolished many other churches amid rising religious tensions, leading thousands of Christians to flee to neighboring provinces. Yet, the persecuted Christians persevere, gathering for worship in tents and homes.

Additionally, Christians in Indonesia have faced a number of coordinated suicide bombings carried out by radical Islamist families. On May 13, 2018, a family of six launched devastating attacks on three churches in Surabaya during Sunday services, killing over a dozen worshippers and injuring scores more. Shockingly, the attackers included the mother and her two young daughters, aged 9 and 12, and a father and his two sons, ages 16 and 18.

While those are a few examples of larger-scale attacks, countless stories of individuals enduring persecution never make headlines. Whether disowned by family, locked in a room by family members, or killed by those in the community, some believers in areas more hostile to Christianity have endured incredible suffering as a result of choosing to follow Jesus.

The intensity of persecution varies across different regions in Indonesia. In provinces like Aceh, West Sumatra, and West Java, Christians experience the highest levels of discrimination and violence. These areas are known for their strict adherence to Islamic laws and customs, making life difficult for religious minorities. Those desiring to change their religion from an official standpoint, because their religion is listed on all important documents, face significant challenges.

Conversely, regions like East Nusa Tenggara and Papua, where Christians form a significant portion of the population, see different forms of pressure. Here, aggressive Islamization efforts target Christian communities, particularly among children, aiming to erode their faith and cultural identity.

Despite these challenges, the Christian community in Indonesia remains steadfast in their faith. Their resilience is a testament to the power of the gospel and the strength that comes from a deep, abiding relationship with Christ. The Apostle Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 resonate deeply with their experience: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”

The reality of Christian persecution in Indonesia is a sobering reminder of the cost of discipleship. Yet, it also highlights the incredible faith and resilience of our brothers and sisters who continue to follow Christ despite immense challenges. As we stand with them in prayer, advocacy, and support, we embody the unity of the body of Christ, demonstrating that when one part suffers, every part suffers with it (1 Corinthians 12:26).

Here are specific ways we can intercede for our brothers and sisters in Indonesia facing persecution:

Protection and Strength: Pray for the physical safety and spiritual strength of Indonesian Christians, especially those in regions like Aceh and West Java, where persecution is most intense.

Legal and Social Change: Ask God to move the hearts of Indonesian leaders and lawmakers to create a more just and equitable society where religious freedom is genuinely upheld.

Unity and Encouragement: Pray for unity among Indonesian Christians and for their encouragement in the face of trials. May they feel the support and love of the global church.

Revival: Pray for a revival in Indonesia, that many would come to know Christ, including those who currently persecute Christians.

May we, as the global church, be faithful to intercede for our brothers and sisters enduring persecution, and may we be inspired by their faith, boldness, and faithfulness.

The post Understanding Christian Persecution: The Reality in Indonesia first appeared on Pray For Indonesia.

In the face of adversity, the Church has often found its greatest strength and growth. Throughout history, persecution has been a catalyst for the spread of the gospel, as believers have been scattered and the message of Christ has taken root in new lands. The book of Acts records how the persecution of the early Church led to its expansion: “Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word“ (Acts 8:4).

In Genesis 50:20, Joseph explains that what the enemy meant for evil, God used for good and for the rescuing of many souls. This is consistent with how God so often takes persecution against His Church and uses it to build up His bride.

The Bible is full of examples of how persecution has been used by God to further His purposes. When the apostle Paul was imprisoned in Rome, he wrote, “Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel” (Philippians 1:12). His chains became a testimony to the guards and those around him, and the gospel spread even within the household of Caesar (Philippians 4:22).

In the book of Acts, we read how the stoning of Stephen, the first Christian martyr, led to a great persecution against the Church in Jerusalem. However, this persecution resulted in the believers being scattered and preaching the word throughout Judea and Samaria (Acts 8:4). The persecution that was intended to silence the Church became the very means by which the gospel message spread to new regions.

At first glance, persecution may seem like a force that would weaken and diminish the Church. After all, how can a community thrive when its members are subjected to violence, imprisonment, and even death for their beliefs? Yet, time and time again, history has shown us that the opposite is true – persecution has been a catalyst for the growth and strengthening of the Church.

The book and documentary “The Insanity of God” by Nik Ripken offer a powerful testimony to the resilience of the persecuted Church. Ripken, a missionary, spent decades interviewing believers in some of the world’s most hostile regions, where following Christ often comes at a great cost. Through their stories, he witnessed the incredible faith and courage of those who have endured persecution for their beliefs.

One of the recurring themes in “The Insanity of God” is how persecution, as mentioned above, has paradoxically led to the growth of the Church. In regions where the gospel has faced the fiercest opposition, Ripken found vibrant communities of believers whose faith had been forged in the fires of adversity. Their unwavering commitment to Christ, even in the face of imprisonment, torture, and death, has been a powerful witness to those around them.

From the early Church in Rome to the underground churches of China and the persecuted believers in the Middle East, the blood of the martyrs has indeed been the seed of the Church.

In “The Insanity of God,” Ripken recounts the story of a young woman in Central Asia who was beaten and raped for her faith. Yet, in the midst of her trauma, she found the strength to forgive her attackers and continue to share the love of Christ with those around her. Her endurance in the face of such adversity was a powerful testimony that drew others to the hope and peace found in the gospel. This is one of countless stories.

This endurance is not born of human strength; it is a gift from God, who promises to be with His people even in the darkest valleys. As the apostle Paul wrote in Romans 5:3-5, “Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

As we consider the reality of persecution faced by our brothers and sisters around the world, we are reminded of the importance of prayer. The apostle Paul frequently asked for prayer for boldness and opportunities to share the gospel, even in the midst of his own imprisonment (Ephesians 6:19-20, Colossians 4:3-4).

We, too, must lift up the persecuted Church in prayer, asking God to strengthen and encourage them in their trials. We can pray for their safety and protection but also for their witness to shine brightly, that even in the midst of adversity, the gospel would continue to spread and take root in new hearts and lives.

Additionally, we can pray for those who persecute believers so that their hearts would be softened and their eyes opened to the truth of the gospel. Just as the apostle Paul, once a persecutor of the Church, was radically transformed by an encounter with the risen Christ, we can pray for similar transformations among those who oppose the gospel today.

As we stand in solidarity with our persecuted brothers and sisters, let us be inspired by their endurance and draw strength from the same source of hope that sustains them – the unwavering love of our Savior, who has overcome the world.

As the apostle Peter wrote in 1 Peter 1:3-7,

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

May this living hope sustain us, and may the testimony of the persecuted Church inspire us to hold fast to our faith, even in the midst of adversity, knowing that our endurance will bear fruit for the Kingdom of God.

Indonesia, a country celebrated for its breathtaking archipelago, rich cultural tapestry, and as a beacon of democracy in Southeast Asia harbors a lesser known, darker narrative. This minor key revolves around the Christian minority, constituting about 10% of the population. The Christian minority navigates a precarious existence marked by discrimination, persecution, and a struggle for religious freedom.

This blog post dives into the historical context of Christianity in Indonesia, the current challenges faced by Christians, and the broader implications of religious intolerance in the country.

Christianity’s roots in Indonesia trace back to the arrival of European traders and missionaries around the 1500s. The Portuguese and the Dutch introduced Christianity to the archipelago, intertwining religious conversion with colonial ambitions. Despite the colonial past, Christianity flourished in certain regions, contributing to the diverse religious landscape of Indonesia.

However the post-independence era, particularly the tumultuous period following the 1965-1966 anti-communist purge, saw a significant shift. The purge led to the massacre of hundreds of thousands of people, indirectly affecting religious minorities, including Christians. It also set a precedent for religious and ethnic tensions.

Today, Indonesia is home to over 34.6 million Christians, a significant minority in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country. Despite the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom, Christians face systemic discrimination, social exclusion, and violence. The Religious Harmony Regulation requiring houses of worship to obtain community approval has led to the closure of over 2,000 churches since its enactment. This regulation, ostensibly aimed at promoting religious harmony, has often been used to suppress Christian worship.

Violence against Christians is not uncommon. In November 2020, the East Indonesia Mujahideen, an affiliate of the Islamic State, attacked a Christian-majority village in Sulawesi. This resulted in deaths, the destruction of homes, and the destruction of a church. Such attacks underscore the volatile security situation for Christians, as Islamist militants frequently target them.

The blasphemy laws in Indonesia further exacerbate the vulnerability of Christians. Critics argue that these laws, with their broad application, have been used to imprison individuals for alleged offenses against Islam, stifling religious expression and fostering a climate of fear among religious minorities.

A tangible manifestation of the challenges faced by Indonesian Christians is the struggle to obtain building permits for churches. The case of Pastor Fadhlan and his congregation in Jakarta is illustrative. After a protracted battle to secure a permit, the authorities forced the church to close during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When they attempted to reopen, they found themselves locked out, their permit revoked. It was only through viral social media pressure that the authorities felt compelled to allow the church to reopen. This incident highlights the bureaucratic and social hurdles Christians must overcome to practice their faith openly.

The persecution of Christians in Indonesia is part of a larger pattern of religious intolerance that affects other minority groups as well, including the Shia, Ahmadiyya Muslims, and even non-believers.The rise of political Islamism in Indonesia also poses a significant challenge to the country’s pluralistic identity.

The push for Sharia law and the establishment of an Islamic state threaten the delicate balance of religious coexistence. The targeting of religious minorities and the use of blasphemy laws to silence dissent are indicative of a broader struggle for the soul of Indonesian democracy.

The plight of Christians in Indonesia is a complex issue rooted in historical, social, and political factors. While the Indonesian constitution guarantees religious freedom, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Christians, along with other religious minorities, navigate a landscape marked by discrimination, persecution, and the constant threat of violence.

The international community must not remain silent on these issues. Raising awareness, advocating for the rights of religious minorities, and supporting local efforts to promote religious tolerance are crucial steps in addressing the hidden plight of Christians in Indonesia. The future of Indonesia’s pluralistic society depends on the ability of its people and government to embrace diversity, uphold the principles of religious freedom, and reject the forces of intolerance and extremism.

But the story of Christianity in Indonesia is not just one of persecution; it is also a testament to resilience, faith, and the enduring hope for a more inclusive and tolerant society. Breaking the silence on the challenges faced by Christians is the first step toward a future where all Indonesians, regardless of their faith, can live in peace and harmony.
