When most people hear the word “Java” they immediately think of coffee. This is because a lot of coffee comes from the island of Java in Indonesia.

Java is one of the largest islands in Indonesia (out of 17,000!). Even though it is roughly the size of Tennessee, 56% of the the population of Indonesia lives on Java. That’s about 152 million people! Think about half the population of America living in Tennessee!

There are many people groups living on the island of Java but the largest are the Javanese and the Sundanese. The Sundanese are the largest unreached people group in Indonesia.

What if Java was covered with prayer by saints all over the world? If there was a movement of God on this island, most of Indonesia would be exposed to the gospel!

Pray for Javanese believers

The Javanese are the largest people group in Indonesia. They are predominately Muslim, but are considered reached because there are around 9.44% evangelicals. Most of the Javanese Christians live in the large cities. Pray for these brothers and sisters in Christ to abide in Jesus and grow in their faith. Pray they would have boldness to share the hope they have in Christ with their families, friends, coworkers and neighbors. Lord, we want to see more harvesters sent out from the Javanese people to reach other UPGs in Indonesia!

Pray for the Sundanese

Sunda is the largest UPG in Indonesia with around 38 million people located in West Java. Only 0.05% are evangelicals with the majority being Muslim. The Sundanese are known for their kindness and believe that having the Sundanese character is the best path of life.

Pray for:

• The Sundanese to walk in the Light, confess their sins, and be cleansed from all unrighteousness by the blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7-9)
• Boldness for the Sundanese believers and church planters to proclaim the gospel and disciple others
• Perseverance and strength for Sundanese who are being persecuted for their faith in Jesus

Pray for Jakarta and Surabaya

Jakarta is the largest city (and capital) in Indonesia located in West Java. Surabaya is not as known but it is the second largest city located in East Java. There are around 3 million people in Surabaya. Pray for unity among churches in these large cities. Ask God to help believers understand the Great Commission and be bold in sharing the gospel with those who don’t know Christ in these cities.

Pray for those from other islands living in Java

Many people from all over Indonesia come to Java to find work. Most of them live in the large cities of Jakarta and Surabaya. There are Indonesians from many of the 240 unreached people groups coming to this island. Pray for these Indonesians to have an opportunity to hear the gospel in Java. Pray that God would connect them to Christians who would disciple them and teach them how to have a relationship with Jesus. Ask God to send these believers back to their people groups to lead many of their people to Him.

Praise God by remembering his attributes – His goodness, mercy, grace, steadfast love, kindness, etc. Praise Him for what He has done in your life.

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

“Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.” Psalm 25:4-5

Sit at the feet of Jesus and wait on Him. Be still and quiet and wait to see what He has for you. Ask Him to lead you in truth in this time.

Confession

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”

Ask God to reveal any sin in your life and confess that sin to Him. Repent of it and thank Him for His forgiveness.

Choose a passage of scripture (maybe one of the Psalms or what you have been reading recently). As you read the Word, use each verse as a prayer to God.

Watching

Develop Holy Alertness – Colossians 4:2

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

As you pray be alert and watch the thoughts coming in your head. Do you have distractions? Acknowledge those and lay them aside. Are you being tempted? Ask God to help you. Are you thinking about the Lord? Continue to dwell on His goodness and express your gratitude to Him. Is a specific person coming to your mind? Pray for that person because the Holy Spirit is putting them on your heart for a reason!

Intercession

Remember the World – 1 Timothy 2:1-2

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”

Spend this time praying for others- family members, friends, neighbors. Also pray for the world. For unreached people groups to have access to the gospel. Pray for persecuted Christians of the world to remain steadfast in their faith.

Bring personal prayer requests you have to the Lord and talk to Him about what has been on your heart, what you are worried about, what you are struggling with.

“give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Spend time thanking God for the blessings in your life. There is so much to be thankful for even in hard seasons!

Pick your favorite worship song or hymn and sing that as a prayer to the Lord.

Meditation

Ponder Spiritual Themes – Joshua 1:8

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

This would be a great time to memorize a verse or call to mind verses you have already memorized. Meditate on the Word and us the verses as prayers.

Listening

Receive Spiritual Instruction – Ecclesiastes 5:2

“Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.”

Spend the next 5 minutes just listening to God. Don’t try to speak or let your thoughts wonder. Ask God to speak to You and help you to listen what He has to say during this time.

Worship the Lord for who He is – Psalm 148:1-6

“Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his hosts! Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars! 3 Prayers for Indonesian Christians

1. “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). – Matthew 1:23

Lord, we pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are being persecuted for their faith in You. Help them remain steadfast in their love for you and draw near to You this Christmas. Remind them that You are Immanuel, God with us. You are taking care of them and providing for their needs.

2. “Since we have such a hope, we are very bold.” – 2 Corinthians 3:12

Give Indonesians a boldness to share their faith with others this Christmas with the strength that only comes from You. We pray for many opportunities for them to share the Christmas story with their families, neighbors, friends and coworkers.

Unify the Indonesian Church in Your name, Jesus. Give them all a desire to take the gospel to every UPG in Indonesia and help them work together to accomplish that task. We pray more and more churches would be trained to share the gospel with Muslims.

Father, tear down barriers of Islam and the stronghold it has on this country. We pray the 220 million Muslims would find freedom in Christ from the bondage of Islam.

5. “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.” – Hebrews 1:1-2

Give Muslims a desire to read the Bible and learn more about Jesus. Reveal yourself to them, Lord, through believers proclaiming the Gospel, media ministries, dreams, and miracles.

6. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen” – Galatians 1:3–5

Help Indonesian Muslims understand that Jesus is God and died for the forgiveness of sins. He wasn’t just a prophet, but the Savior of the world who is worthy of all worship. God, draw Muslims to Yourself this Christmas. We pray they would want to know Truth, hear the Christmas story and understand why Jesus came to earth as a baby. This was Your plan from the beginning, Lord. Reveal it to Indonesians.

You are our faithful God who answers our prayers! Thank you for using dreams to lead many Muslims to you. Continue to reveal yourself to Indonesians through dreams, visions, and miracles.

We ask that you would bring millions of Muslims in Indonesia from darkness to light. Would they believe Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life and find abundant, everlasting life through Him.

Thankful for the Bible being Translated into Local Languages

Lord, thank you for the many Bible translation projects going on in Indonesia. There are more than 700 ethnic languages in Indonesia and only 10% have portions of the Bible translated. We thank you that the New Testament was recently translated into the Osing and Tengger languages in East Java.

Please raise up Indonesian believers to start translating the Bible to their heart language. Send Bible translation teams to unreached people groups to learn the language and culture well in order to translate the Bible.

We thank you for ministries like Wycliffe Bible Translators who have a new goal to see a Bible translation project started in every language needing one by 2025! They are starting 30 projects in Indonesia soon. Thank you for YouVersion and illumiNations who are translating the New Testament in every language by 2033. Bless these ministries and provide all the funds so that these translation projects can be completed and put into the hands of the local people.

1. Start praying for the lost

Acts 26:18 – To open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

Not only is Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world, but also has 5 other major religions; Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. There are still millions of people who are lost devoting their lives to false gods and religions. Most have never heard the good news of Jesus and many have never even heard the name of Jesus. Pray for God to open their eyes so that they receive the forgiveness of sins through Jesus who died for them and rose from the grave.

2. Pray specifically for the UPGs

Psalm 96:3 – Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

According to Joshua Project, an unreached people group (UPG) is “a people group among which there is no indigenous community of believing Christians with adequate numbers and resources to evangelize this people group without outside assistance.” Out of the 789 people groups in Indonesia, 235 are still unreached.

Pray for God to send believers to these unreached people groups to share the gospel and disciple new believers. Pray His glory would spread to every people group and they would hear of His marvelous deeds. Intercede for the 7 largest UPGs in Indonesia.

3. Pray for more local laborers

Matthew 9:37-38 – Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

The harvest is plentiful in Indonesia and there are still many more lost sheep who God will bring into the Kingdom! Jesus has told us to pray for more laborers to be sent out into the harvest. Let’s pray God raises up laborers from churches, from other nations, and even from Muslim families.

These workers will finish the task in Indonesia by proclaiming the gospel, discipling new believers, and planting churches. There needs to be faithful gospel workers in every people group who know the heart language of that people group and will spread the gospel among them.

4. Pray for the persecuted

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:10–12

5. Pray for the gospel to spread like wildfire

“Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you” 2 Thessalonians 3:1

Ask the Holy Spirit to do the same work in Indonesia as He did in the early days of the church. Pray for the gospel to spread rapidly through believers going and sharing Truth in every island, people group and village in Indonesia. May every man, woman, and child hear the gospel in our lifetime!

6. Pray for a country a day

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10

Operation World is a great resource to start praying for the nations. They have very detailed information for each county, their needs, and how to be praying for them. Not only are you learning about the different countries but you can touch every part of the world through praying for the nations. God will hear and answer your prayers!

7. Pray for new believers in Indonesia to grow in their faith

“Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.” Philippians 3:8-9

So many Muslims who place their faith in Jesus fall away and stop following Him after experiencing pressure and persecution from their families and communities. Pray boldly for these new believers to remain steadfast in their faith! Pray for them to be discipled and endure when persecution comes. Ask for them to see the immeasurable worth of following Christ that they are willing to lose their families or even their own lives to follow Him.

8. Pray for the churches

“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.” 1 Corinthians 1:10

Many churches in Indonesia are more inward focused than outward. Pray for the churches to rise up and share boldly with Muslims. Ask for unity in the churches and that they would work together to reach their country and send workers to UPGs in Indonesia.

9. Pray for the workers/church planters

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58

It is hard to be a church planter in Indonesia. You face constant discouragement and rejection and do not receive a large salary. Pray for Indonesian church-planters to rise up and go to the places where there are no churches. Ask God to lead them to persons of peace. Pray for foreign workers and church-planters to work well with Indonesians to reach their people.

10. Pray for dreams and miracles

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.” Joel 2:28

Many Muslim background believers (MBB) share that Jesus appeared to them in a dream before they were believers. In many cases, a Muslim has a dream of Jesus around the time they were evangelized. Dreams and visions of Jesus are a crucial part of many MBBs testimonies.

Muslims have also come to faith by witnessing a miracle in their life by someone praying in the name of Jesus. Maybe it was physical healing, financial provision or another inexplicable act that had to be from the Divine. God is still using miracles today to reach Muslims. Pray for Indonesians to have dreams of Jesus and witness miracles that will lead them to turn to Christ.

How do we respond to persecution?

“Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” 2 Timothy 3:12

It is clear that persecution comes with following Jesus. It is something to expect as long as we are in this broken world that is against God. Our instinct reaction is to pray for God to save believers from persecution. But in the Bible, most times the believers pray for their strength to endure, instead of asking God to take them out of that situation.

“Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.” James 5:11

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58

God calls us to love and pray for those who persecute us, as Jesus did. “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” Matthew 5:44

Persecution actually leads believers to have more boldness to share the gospel! “And most of the brothers, confident in the Lord by my chains, now dare more greatly to speak the word without fear.” Philippians 1:14

Prayer Requests for Persecuted Believers in Indonesia

• Pray that Fenny, the victim of a church bombing, will receive effective medical treatment despite her difficult circumstances. 
• For pastors facing financial crises, especially those who rent worship space. 
• Pray for Kandhi, who, along with her daughter, Meice, witnessed her husband’s murder by Muslim terrorists. 
• That Cut Fitri will be reunited with her children, who were taken when she left Islam.
• For Rosyid and Misbach, who minister among some of the most radical Muslims in West Java. 
• Pray for Pak A and his wife who are experiencing extreme persecution from their family and community. Praise God that 4 house churches have started from Pak A’s boldness in sharing the gospel.
• Pray for D and A whose families have found out they are followers of Jesus. Ask God to help them remain steadfast in His despite family pressures.

In this past year there have been 360 million Christians living in places where they experience high levels of persecution or discrimination. 5,898 Christians were killed for their faith and 4,765 believers were detained without trial, arrested, sentenced or imprisoned.

We are called to pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are being persecuted. Ask the Father to strengthen, encourage, and comfort these believers who are suffering so that they remain steadfast in their faith.

1. Pray for believers to rejoice amidst persecution, knowing their reward is great in heaven

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:10–12

2. Pray for persecuted Christians to not fear

“Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” Revelation 2:10–11

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4

3. Pray for them to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves

“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles.” Matthew 10:16–18

“But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much conflict.” 1 Thessalonians 2:2

5. Pray for them to be comforted so that they can comfort others who are persecuted

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

1. Sunda

Sunda is the largest UPG and the second largest people group with around 38 million people located in West Java. Only 0.05% are evangelicals with the majority being Muslim. The Sundanese are known for their kindness and believe that having the Sundanese character is the best path of life.

2. Java Pesisir Lor

There are 37.5 million Java Pesisir Lor who live on the North Coast of Central Java. They are 97% Sunni Muslims and follow Islamic Folk practices. They make regular pilgrimages to the graves of the “9 saints of Javanese Islam.” Once at the graves, they beseech these ancients spirits for health, salvation and sustenance.

Some Java Pesisir Lor have placed their faith in Jesus after seeing Him in dreams or reading about His superiority in the Qur’an. However, Muslim Background Believers are severely persecuted by their family and community.

Pray for religious leaders and shamans to become followers of Jesus.

3. Java Mancanegari

The Java Mancanegari live in East Java and have a population of 21 million. Only 0.22% are evangelical.

Most mix Muslim beliefs with Hindu or pre-Hindu beliefs. They learn to read the Qur’an but they often don’t understand what they are reading. They use Islamic prayers and written verses from the Qur’an to ward off evil spirits and use as good luck charms.

The Java Mancanegari are considered “less refined” compared to other Javanese people groups. They are known for their openness and straight-forwardness.

Pray for the Java Mancanegari to believe in Jesus as the one and only God who is all-powerful and all-knowing.

4. Madura

There are 14 million Madurese making them the 4th largest UPG in Indonesia. Most of the Madurese people live on the island of Madura and in East Java. They are known to have harsh personalities. The Madurese have a popular saying that it is better to die than to be humiliated. They are one of the poorest people groups in Indonesia. Many work as farmers or fishermen.

There are very few churches among these devout Muslims. Pray for the church-planting teams to have perseverance to share the gospel and that many would believe through them.

Pray God would soften their hearts and there would be greater receptivity to the gospel

5. Java Banyumasan

There are 9 million Java Banyumasan living on the South coast of the island of Java. They make their living from farming, but unlike other Indonesian groups, they use more modern equipment and make good use of the land.

The people of Java Banyumasan are majority Muslim but 80% are nominal Muslims. They also hold animistic beliefs. They seek help by a dukun (witch doctor) if they need help or are sick.

Pray for the light of Christ to expel the darkness of the Occult and its practices.

6. Minangkabau

The Minangkabau are the people of West Sumatra. They live in the large city of Padang and the surrounding areas. There are almost 7 million Minangkabau who are 99.72% Muslim.

They speak the Minang language which has many dialects. Their famous saying is, “To be Minangkabau is to be Muslim.” The Minangkabau have a matrilineal culture where the family name and wealth is inherited by the daughter. Their “Padang” cuisine is famous as they have restaurants all over Indonesia.

Pray for the Minangkabau believers to have boldness to share the love of Christ with their family and friends.

7. Betawi

The Betawi people live in the nation’s capital, Jakarta, and the surrounding areas. There are 5.7 million Betawi people making them the 7th largest of the UPGs in Indonesia.

Some of the Betawi people live urban lives in the capital while most of them work as rice farmers and fishermen. They are the original inhabitants of Jakarta. The influx of tourists and workers from other areas have made it difficult for the Betawi to preserve their cultural identity.

Church planting teams are now using more strategies to engage people and share the gospel through the internet. According to 2021 study, most people are on their smart phones for over 3 hours a day. Whether someone lives in a metropolitan city or a remote village, smart phones have become a daily essential device.

If someone in an unreached people group wants to know more about Jesus, what will they do? Most likely they will google their questions if they don’t know any followers of Jesus. To find those seekers online, teams are now creating ads on social media and google that share about the hope we have in Christ to sow the seed more broadly.

Structure of Media to Movements

So how does Media to Movements work? Teams create content in the local language and share it on social media and Google through ads. People in the focused location then see the ad as they scroll through social media or search something online. Those interested in learning more about Jesus can click the link that leads them to the website. Through the website, they can start connecting with a digital responder who can answer questions they have about Jesus. They will then connect the seeker or new believer to a team member in their area who can start meeting with them face to face to continue discipleship.

Launching in Indonesia

A church-planting team in Indonesia has begun launching a Media to Movements Initiative to reach their target people group. They are in the initial stage of defining roles of team members and creating the website and content for social media. They are planning to launch the website and content February 2022!

Indonesians have the most users on Facebook in the world with 115 million people! They love sharing content, joining groups, and commenting on posts – 60% more that people in other countries. The Media to Movements Initiative is using social media to spread the gospel in Indonesia and find people who God has been preparing to hear and believe.

The team must cover this initiative in prayer and seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance through every step. Please ask the Lord to use this initiative to lead many Indonesians to Him and to spread the gospel to every man, woman, and child among this unreached people group.*
