She joined the Young Life Campaign, dedicating her off days to learning how to share the gospel. Aylward felt a strong call to serve in China through one of their magazines, where many had yet to hear the Christian message. Despite her lack of formal education and being in her late twenties, she presented as a candidate for the China Inland Mission in 1929.

Although initially accepted into their training program, Aylward was asked to leave after three months. Undeterred, she returned to her maid work, saving money to fund her journey to China. Her perseverance paid off, and she had enough to travel within a year, thanks to contributions from friends and employers.

Aylward’s arrival in China in 1932 marked the beginning of her missionary work. She joined missionary Jeannie Lawson in Yangcheng, where they ran The Inn of Eight Happinesses. This place served as a waystation for mule caravans and a place to share the gospel. Aylward quickly immersed herself in the language and culture, adopting local dress and customs.

Her missionary work took a dramatic turn when she began taking in unwanted and orphaned children. It started with a beggar woman offering her daughter for sale. Aylward, moved by compassion, adopted the child, naming her Mei-en, or “Ninepence.” This act of kindness led to the inn becoming an orphanage, prompting the provincial governor to start a school.

The outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 thrust Aylward into a new role. She became a Chinese citizen to better identify with those she served. As a result she found herself behind enemy lines, reporting information to the Chinese authorities. Her efforts earned her the name ‘Ai-weh-deh,’ meaning ‘Virtuous One.’

Perhaps the most harrowing chapter of Aylward’s life was rescuing over a hundred orphans during the war. With the Japanese closing in, Aylward led the children on a perilous 12-day journey across mountains to safety.

Despite running out of food and facing numerous dangers, they received help along the way, including from a Buddhist priest and Chinese soldiers. When they reached the Yellow River with no boats in sight, Aylward and the children prayed, and miraculously, a Chinese officer arranged their crossing.

Aylward’s influence extended far beyond her lifetime. After being forced to leave China when the Communists gained power in 1949, she established the Gladys Aylward Orphanage in Taiwan. Resulting in continued work with abandoned children. Her story gained widespread attention with the publication of Alan Burgess’ biography “The Small Woman” in 1957. As well as the subsequent film “The Inn of the Sixth Happiness,” which, despite its romanticized portrayal, helped raise funds for her cause.

Aylward’s legacy is one of faith and tenacity. She was an unlikely candidate for missionary work, but her unwavering faith and determination enabled her to overcome insurmountable obstacles. Her life challenges the complacent and encourages the discouraged, showing that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things through faith.

In 1938, Wurmbrand and his wife encountered a Christian carpenter who shared the gospel with them. He even gave them a Bible for them to read. After reading it, they experienced a profound spiritual awakening. From that day forward, Wurmbrand and his wife dedicated their lives to serving God. As a result, they spread the message of Christ’s love and redemption.

Wurmbrand’s newfound faith would soon put him at odds with the oppressive communist regime that had taken control of Romania. As a pastor, he openly preached the gospel and advocated for religious freedom, actions viewed as a direct challenge to the government’s authority. In 1948, Wurmbrand was arrested and subjected to a series of brutal interrogations and torture sessions, all to force him to renounce his faith.

For the next 14 years, Wurmbrand endured the unimaginable horrors of communist prisons. In those prisons he experienced physical and psychological abuse, starvation, and solitary confinement. Despite the immense suffering he endured, Wurmbrand’s faith never wavered. He used his time in prison to minister to his fellow inmates. Müller’s early years were far from exemplary. By the age of ten, he was already stealing money from his father, and his teenage years were characterized by deceit, theft, and gambling. His mother passed away when he was fourteen, and on the night of her death, Müller was out drinking and playing cards.

Despite his enrollment in the University of Halle to study divinity, his life was marked by what he described as “wicked behavior and an unrepentant spirit.”

The turning point in Müller’s life came in 1825 when he attended a prayer meeting. This meeting profoundly moved him, sparking a transformation that would define the rest of his life. Müller later reflected, “I have no doubt … that He began a work of grace in me. Even though I scarcely had any knowledge of who God truly was, that evening was the turning point in my life”. Resolved to live a life wholly dependent on God’s guidance and provision, he made it a daily practice to bring his needs and those of others before the Lord. This habit would become the foundation upon which his life’s work was built.

Burdened by the plight of orphans in Bristol, England, he established an orphanage, but with a unique twist – he vowed never to ask anyone for financial support. Instead, he would rely solely on God’s provision through prayer.

From the outset, Müller’s endeavor was met with skepticism and doubt. How could a man with no financial resources or backing hope to undertake such a monumental task? Yet, Müller remained steadfast in his conviction. He believed that if God had called him to this work, then God would provide for every need. And provide He did, in ways that defied human logic.

Through the years, Müller witnessed countless miracles as God faithfully supplied the resources needed to care for the orphans. From food and clothing to shelter and education, every need was met through prayer and the generosity of God’s people. Müller’s unwavering trust in the Lord’s provision became a living testimony to the world, inspiring countless individuals to deepen their own prayer lives and trust in God.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Müller’s prayer life was his commitment to recording every answered prayer. Over the course of his life, he documented more than 50,000 specific answers to prayer, a staggering number that serves as a powerful reminder of God’s attentiveness to the cries of His children. Müller’s life was a living example of the truth found in Philippians 4:19: “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

One notable instance of God’s provision occurred when the orphanage had no food. As they gathered for their morning meal, the cupboards were bare, and there was no apparent means of obtaining provisions. Undeterred, Müller led the children in prayer, trusting that God would provide. Remarkably, as they were praying, a knock came at the door. A baker stood there, explaining that he had been unable to sleep the previous night and felt compelled to bake bread for the orphanage. Shortly after, a second knock revealed a farmer arrived with a cart full of milk, having felt an inexplicable urge to share his surplus with the orphanage.

In another instance, Müller found himself in need of a substantial sum of money to cover the orphanage’s expenses. With unwavering faith, he prayed, and within a few days, an anonymous donor sent a letter containing the exact amount needed, down to the last penny.

Another remarkable story from his travels involves a journey to Quebec. Müller’s ship encountered thick fog, and the captain informed him that they would not be able to reach their destination on time. Müller requested to pray in the chart room, and after a simple prayer, he assured the captain that the fog would lift. When they returned to the deck, the fog had indeed cleared, allowing Müller to keep his appointment. The captain, deeply moved by this experience, became a Christian shortly afterward.

Over the course of his life, he received and disbursed over $7 million (equivalent to billions in today’s currency) for the care of orphans and the spread of the gospel, all without ever asking for donations or going into debt.

In a world that often values self-reliance and human effort, George Müller’s life is a powerful reminder of what God can accomplish through a person wholly devoted to Him. He believed that prayer was not a last resort but the first and most powerful resource available to believers. Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). John Allen Chau’s life demonstrated a commitment to that invitation.

From an early age, John Allen Chau felt a deep calling to share the love of Christ with those who had never heard the Good News. Born into a Christian family, he grew up with a profound understanding of the Great Commission’s mandate to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). This calling burned brightly within him, fueling a passion that would ultimately lead him to the remote shores of North Sentinel Island, home to one of the world’s last remaining uncontacted tribes.

In college, he spent his summers serving in various parts of the world, including South Africa and Kurdistan. These experiences only deepened his resolve to reach the unreached, and after graduating, he took his next step in preparing to go.

Recognizing the immense challenges of reaching an isolated and hostile tribe, Chau dedicated himself to meticulous preparation. He spent years studying the Sentinelese, determined to communicate the gospel in a way that would resonate with their worldview. 

Fully aware of the dangers involved in approaching the Sentinelese, Chau remained undeterred. In a letter to his parents, he wrote, “You guys might think I’m crazy in all this, but I think it’s worth it to declare Jesus to these people.” His faith in the power of the gospel and his love for the lost outweighed any fear or concern for his own safety.

On November 15, 2018, John Allen Chau set out on his final mission, paddling a small kayak toward the shores of North Sentinel Island. Despite being shot at with arrows on his first two attempts to make contact, Chau persisted, driven by a deep conviction to share his Christian faith with the isolated tribe. The Sentinelese, known for their resistance to outsiders, made it clear through their actions that they did not welcome Chau’s presence on their island.

His body was never recovered, but the details of his final days, as recorded in his journal, paint a picture of a man who remained steadfast in his commitment to sharing the love of Christ, even in the face of imminent danger.

While Chau’s death was a tragic loss, his legacy continues to inspire and challenge believers around the world. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices required to fulfill the Great Commission and the urgency of reaching those who have yet to hear the gospel.

As we reflect on John Allen Chau’s courageous life and unwavering commitment, we are reminded of the countless unreached people groups still waiting to hear the transformative message of salvation. Lottie’s story is a testament to the transformative power of God’s grace. Born in Virginia into a privileged family on December 12, 1840, Lottie was blessed with a brilliant mind and a gift for languages. After her father died, she spent many of her years at a boarding school where students were required to attend daily chapel service. Yet, despite her many talents and opportunities, she initially harbored doubts about Christianity during her youth. There were times when she was pretty vocal about this and was known as a bit of a troublemaker.

However, a spiritual awakening occurred when she attended an evangelistic meeting led by Baptist preacher John Broadus. This pivotal moment led to a profound transformation in Moon’s life, culminating in her public profession of faith in Jesus on December 21, 1858. This marked the beginning of her journey of faith and calling to serve as a missionary, setting the stage for her impactful work in China and beyond.

Lottie’s calling led her to China in 1873, where she immersed herself fully in the culture to spread the Good News despite facing numerous challenges.  She traveled extensively around Shandong province to reach the most remote villages, her heart burning to share the love of Christ. But Lottie’s impact went far beyond preaching; she established schools for young girls, vehemently opposed the practice of foot-binding, and visited countless homes to teach the Scriptures.

Her passionate letters back to the U.S. urged for more support and workers to continue the mission, stirring many to greater obedience to the Great Commission. Moon’s sacrificial life and relentless efforts helped sow the seeds of revival in Pingdu and other parts of Shandong, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to impact Chinese communities to this day.

Lottie Moon’s commitment to her mission was unwavering. Despite facing numerous challenges, including poverty, illness, and political unrest, she remained steadfast in her resolve to bring hope and salvation to those in need. Her selfless acts of service reflected the very heart of Christ, endearing her to the Chinese community. She was a woman consumed by love for God and love for others.

Hidden away in the Amazon rainforest, a young woman named Elisabeth Elliot began a journey that would forever change the course of her life and the lives of countless others. Her tenacious faith, obedience to God, and commitment to sharing the gospel with those who had never heard would inspire generations to come as she dedicated her life to knowing Jesus and making Him known.

Born in 1926 in Belgium to Christian missionary parents, Elisabeth Elliot’s heart was stirred from a young age by the plight of those who had not yet heard the gospel. As she grew older, her desire to serve the Lord only intensified as she felt a deep calling to bring the message of salvation to the most remote and unreached corners of the world.

After completing her studies at Wheaton College, Elisabeth eventually set sail for Ecuador, where she would spend the next several years immersed in studying the culture and language of the people she came to serve. It was during this time that she, after years of waiting, finally married Jim Elliot, a former classmate and fellow missionary with a shared passion for reaching the lost.

In 1956, just two years and three months after Elisabeth and Jim got married, tragedy struck when Jim and four other missionaries were brutally killed by the Waodani tribe, a group they had been trying to reach. The news of their deaths sent shockwaves through the Christian community. 

The tragic deaths of Jim Elliot and his fellow missionaries at the hands of the Waodani tribe in 1956 could have marked the end of their mission there. However, in a remarkable display of faith and forgiveness, Jim’s widow, Elisabeth Elliot, returned to the very tribe that had killed her husband, determined to continue their work. This may have surprised anyone who heard the story but not anyone who knew Elisabeth. 

Driven by an unwavering commitment to God’s love and a desire to reach the Waodani, Elisabeth and others began learning the language and building relationships with the Waodani. Her decision to forgive rather than retaliate had a profound impact on the Waodani. In time, many of the very people who had killed the five men came to know God, their hearts softened by the witness of these courageous women. 

Though the initial loss was devastating, the enduring legacy of these martyrs and those who went back as witnesses continues to inspire believers around the world to courageously follow Christ, no matter the cost.

As the years passed, Elisabeth’s influence and impact only grew. She became a renowned author, speaker, and teacher, sharing her experiences and insights with audiences around the world. Her books, such as “Through Gates of Splendor,” “Passion and Purity,” and “Shadow of the Almighty,” became beloved classics, helping countless readers to deepen their walk with God and consider the cost of discipleship.

Elisabeth’s journey was not an easy one, but her journey through suffering was not in vain. She spoke often about how death is the doorway to life, and the best display of that is the cross of Christ. In her later years, she wrote a book titled Suffering is Never for Nothing, and you see a flavor of that message in most of what she spoke and wrote about.

“The deepest things that I have learned in my own life have come from the deepest suffering. And out of the deepest waters and the hottest fires have come the deepest things that I know about God.” -Elisabeth Elliot

But Elisabeth’s legacy extended far beyond her written works. This lead to a period of rebellion before his eventual conversion to Christianity.

Adoniram Judson’s conversion to Christianity was a pivotal moment in his life, marked by a profound shift from skepticism to faith. Influenced by the tragic death of a friend and the realization of his own spiritual lostness, Judson sought God’s forgiveness and dedicated himself to serving the Lord.

This transformative experience led him to abandon his aspirations for personal fame and honor. He instead choose to pursue missionary work with commitment and zeal. In 1809, inspired by a burden to spread the Gospel, Judson embarked on a missionary journey that would shape his legacy as a pioneer in American missions.

Judson’s journey to Burma was marked by unexpected events and challenges. He and his wife, Ann, initially set sail for India. Upon reaching Burma they faced numerous difficulties including illness, cultural adaptation struggles, the loss of their children, and Adoniram’s imprisonment. Despite these adversities, the Judsons persevered in their mission work.

Judson made enormous contributions towards establishing the Christian church in Burma; he translated the Bible into Burmese. As a result, it helped to establish churches among diverse ethnic groups like the Burman and Karen peoples. His dedication to evangelism not only enriched the spiritual landscape of Burma, it also left a legacy of faith among the local population.

Adoniram Judson challenged traditional missionary methods by embracing cultural adaptation and innovative approaches to evangelism. Instead of relying solely on Western preaching techniques, Judson set up a zayat. This was a booth near the Shway Dagon Pagoda, where he engaged with the locals and preached in Burmese. By prioritizing direct engagement with the Burmese people, Judson demonstrated an effective approach to spreading the Gospel in a foreign land.

As well as the establishment of native Burmese churches and the enduring influence of his work. This inspires generations to continue spreading the Gospel to unreached peoples.

Moreover, his enduring impact on the growth of Christianity in Burma, despite setbacks, inspires missionaries to persevere in their mission work with faith and resilience knowing that even small seeds planted can yield significant spiritual harvests over time.

Because missionary efforts have played a crucial role in the spread of Christianity along the islands. It has led to a diverse faith community that makes up around 10% of the country’s population. The history of Christianity in Indonesia is marked by interactions between foreign missionaries and local theology. In addition to regional differences across the vast archipelago. This historical context sets the stage for understanding the dynamic and evolving landscape of Christianity in Indonesia today.

Furthermore, missionary work in Indonesia has been marked by a blend of challenges and successes. His life, marked by an unwavering commitment to spreading the Gospel and an ultimate sacrifice, continues to inspire generations. Today’s Christians can draw inspiration from the early life and mission of Jim Elliot, exploring the profound legacy and impact he left behind.

Born on October 8, 1927, in Portland, Oregon, Jim Elliot grew up in a devout Christian household. From a young age, his parents instilled in him the importance of the Bible, prayer, and living for Christ. By the age of six, Jim had already made a decisive profession of faith which set the stage for a life dedicated to serving God.

As a result, Elliot’s passion for missions kindled early on, fanned into flame by the lives of missionaries like William Carey. This calling led him to Wheaton College outside Chicago, where he majored in Greek studies. Learning the original language of the New Testament would prepare him to translate it into other languages on the mission field. He met Elisabeth Howard at Wheaton, who would later become his wife and partner in ministry.

Later on, Jim’s college years were marked by a fervent pursuit of God and a deepening of his spiritual convictions. He was known for his discipline, intelligence, and a wide array of talents, from wrestling to poetry. Yet, above all, he had his heart set on missions. His spiritual journal, filled with reflections on faith and dedication to Christ, became a testament to his inner life and commitment.  

After graduating from Wheaton, Jim embarked on his mission to Ecuador, joining forces with fellow missionaries to reach the Waorani people. The Waorani were an indigenous tribe in the Amazonian rainforest, known for their complete isolation. The missionary endeavor, known as Operation Auca, was marked by innovative approaches to establish contact and build trust with the tribe, including airdropping supplies and using loudspeakers to transmit friendly messages.

Despite the dangers, the team pressed on. The Waorani needed to hear the message of Jesus Christ. Their efforts to make contact with the tribe culminated in tragedy on January 8, 1956 when Jim and four other missionaries were speared to death by the men they sought to reach.

The news of the missionaries’ deaths sent shockwaves around the world. Their unwavering faith and sacrifice left an indelible mark on the Christian community and beyond. Jim Elliot’s life and words, particularly his journal entry declaring,

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose,”

became a rallying cry for Christians to live fully for God’s glory.

The aftermath of the tragedy saw an incredible unfolding of grace and redemption. Elisabeth Elliot and other members of the missionary team chose to continue their work among the Waorani. This led to many in the tribe coming to faith in Christ.
