Hidden away in the Amazon rainforest, a young woman named Elisabeth Elliot began a journey that would forever change the course of her life and the lives of countless others. Her tenacious faith, obedience to God, and commitment to sharing the gospel with those who had never heard would inspire generations to come as she dedicated her life to knowing Jesus and making Him known.

Born in 1926 in Belgium to Christian missionary parents, Elisabeth Elliot’s heart was stirred from a young age by the plight of those who had not yet heard the gospel. As she grew older, her desire to serve the Lord only intensified as she felt a deep calling to bring the message of salvation to the most remote and unreached corners of the world.

After completing her studies at Wheaton College, Elisabeth eventually set sail for Ecuador, where she would spend the next several years immersed in studying the culture and language of the people she came to serve. It was during this time that she, after years of waiting, finally married Jim Elliot, a former classmate and fellow missionary with a shared passion for reaching the lost.

In 1956, just two years and three months after Elisabeth and Jim got married, tragedy struck when Jim and four other missionaries were brutally killed by the Waodani tribe, a group they had been trying to reach. The news of their deaths sent shockwaves through the Christian community.

The tragic deaths of Jim Elliot and his fellow missionaries at the hands of the Waodani tribe in 1956 could have marked the end of their mission there. However, in a remarkable display of faith and forgiveness, Jim’s widow, Elisabeth Elliot, returned to the very tribe that had killed her husband, determined to continue their work. This may have surprised anyone who heard the story but not anyone who knew Elisabeth.

Driven by an unwavering commitment to God’s love and a desire to reach the Waodani, Elisabeth and others began learning the language and building relationships with the Waodani. Her decision to forgive rather than retaliate had a profound impact on the Waodani. In time, many of the very people who had killed the five men came to know God, their hearts softened by the witness of these courageous women.

Though the initial loss was devastating, the enduring legacy of these martyrs and those who went back as witnesses continues to inspire believers around the world to courageously follow Christ, no matter the cost.

As the years passed, Elisabeth’s influence and impact only grew. She became a renowned author, speaker, and teacher, sharing her experiences and insights with audiences around the world. Her books, such as “Through Gates of Splendor,” “Passion and Purity,” and “Shadow of the Almighty,” became beloved classics, helping countless readers to deepen their walk with God and consider the cost of discipleship.

Elisabeth’s journey was not an easy one, but her journey through suffering was not in vain. She spoke often about how death is the doorway to life, and the best display of that is the cross of Christ. In her later years, she wrote a book titled Suffering is Never for Nothing, and you see a flavor of that message in most of what she spoke and wrote about.

“The deepest things that I have learned in my own life have come from the deepest suffering. And out of the deepest waters and the hottest fires have come the deepest things that I know about God.” -Elisabeth Elliot

But Elisabeth’s legacy extended far beyond her written works. Her life was a testament to the transformative power of God’s love (1 John 4:10), and her unwavering commitment to the gospel has inspired countless others to follow in her footsteps. Whether it was ministering to the Waodani tribe, teaching at a Bible college, or mentoring young believers, Elisabeth’s heart was always focused on sharing the message that God is worthy of our full trust and obedience.

“He is always doing something–the very best thing, the thing we ourselves would certainly choose if we knew the end from the beginning. He is at work to bring us to our full glory.” -Elisabeth Elliot

Adoniram Judson, a prominent American missionary born in 1788, played a pivotal role in spreading the Gospel in Burma. Judson’s dedication to translating the Bible into Burmese and establishing churches laid the foundation for a vibrant Baptist Christian community. This took place in a land where Christianity was virtually unknown.

Despite facing immense challenges Judson’s unwavering commitment to missionary work and innovative approaches to evangelism inspired generations of missionaries. His legacy continues to resonate through the thousands of converts he influenced. As well as the enduring impact of his work on modern missions, reflecting a life dedicated to serving God.

Challenging the status quo in missionary work involves adapting traditional approaches to effectively spread the Gospel. This includes diverse and evolving contexts. By questioning established norms and embracing innovative strategies, missionaries can engage with communities in ways that resonate with their unique cultures and beliefs.

Flexibility, creativity, and cultural sensitivity are paramount to reaching people with the message of Christ. Missionaries must step outside comfort zones and explore new methods that can lead to deeper connections and greater impact. Challenging the status quo in missionary work is not just about change for the sake of change but about staying relevant, authentic, and effective in fulfilling the Great Commission in a rapidly changing world.

Adoniram Judson was raised in a Christian home with a strong religious influence from his father. He was a Congregational minister known for his stern demeanor. His upbringing provided him with ample opportunities for success and intellectual growth. Judson displayed intellectual potential from a young age. He mastering the Greek language by twelve and graduating as valedictorian from Brown University at sixteen. Despite his academic excellence, Judson initially rejected God and embraced Deism. This lead to a period of rebellion before his eventual conversion to Christianity.

Adoniram Judson’s conversion to Christianity was a pivotal moment in his life, marked by a profound shift from skepticism to faith. Influenced by the tragic death of a friend and the realization of his own spiritual lostness, Judson sought God’s forgiveness and dedicated himself to serving the Lord.

This transformative experience led him to abandon his aspirations for personal fame and honor. He instead choose to pursue missionary work with commitment and zeal. In 1809, inspired by a burden to spread the Gospel, Judson embarked on a missionary journey that would shape his legacy as a pioneer in American missions.

Judson’s journey to Burma was marked by unexpected events and challenges. He and his wife, Ann, initially set sail for India. Upon reaching Burma they faced numerous difficulties including illness, cultural adaptation struggles, the loss of their children, and Adoniram’s imprisonment. Despite these adversities, the Judsons persevered in their mission work.

Judson made enormous contributions towards establishing the Christian church in Burma; he translated the Bible into Burmese. As a result, it helped to establish churches among diverse ethnic groups like the Burman and Karen peoples. His dedication to evangelism not only enriched the spiritual landscape of Burma, it also left a legacy of faith among the local population.

Adoniram Judson challenged traditional missionary methods by embracing cultural adaptation and innovative approaches to evangelism. Instead of relying solely on Western preaching techniques, Judson set up a zayat. This was a booth near the Shway Dagon Pagoda, where he engaged with the locals and preached in Burmese. His willingness to immerse himself in the local culture and language marked a departure from conventional missionary practices of the time. By prioritizing direct engagement with the Burmese people, Judson demonstrated an effective approach to spreading the Gospel in a foreign land.

Judson’s respect for the Burmese people and his willingness to adapt his missionary methods to align with their cultural context set him apart as a pioneer in cross-cultural ministry. By prioritizing language fluency and cultural sensitivity, Judson not only facilitated better communication but also fostered genuine connections. As a result, it laid the groundwork for successful evangelism and church planting in Burma.

Judson’s work in Burma left a lasting impact on the country’s religious landscape. The legacy of Judson’s efforts can be seen in the thousands of converts. As well as the establishment of native Burmese churches and the enduring influence of his work. This inspires generations to continue spreading the Gospel to unreached peoples.

His commitment in the face of adversity serves as a model for missionaries facing similar challenges today. Moreover, his enduring impact on the growth of Christianity in Burma, despite setbacks, inspires missionaries to persevere in their mission work with faith and resilience knowing that even small seeds planted can yield significant spiritual harvests over time.

Adoniram Judson’s life was marked by significant challenges. This included health difficulties, imprisonment, and personal losses such as the deaths of his wife and children. Despite these hardships, Judson’s steadfast commitment to spreading the Gospel led him to translate the Bible into Burmese. As well as establish churches, and found a vibrant Christian community in Burma. His pioneering missionary methods, cultural adaptation, and dedication to language learning continue to inspire modern missionaries. Emphasizing the importance of humility, faithfulness, and perseverance in cross-cultural ministry.

Challenging the status quo in spreading the Gospel is crucial for adapting to changing times, reaching diverse cultures, and effectively communicating the message of Christ. By challenging traditional methods and embracing innovative approaches, missionaries can engage with people in ways that resonate with their unique contexts and worldviews. This willingness to step outside conventional boundaries not only fosters deeper connections with communities but also opens doors for greater impact and transformation.

Indonesia, with its intricate tapestry of over 17,000 islands and a myriad of ethnic groups, stands as a pivotal player in the 10/40 Window, a region known for its dense population of unreached communities. This vast archipelago presents a unique and multifaceted mission field, characterized by a rich blend of cultures, languages, and religions. A closer look at Indonesia unveils a landscape teeming with both challenges and opportunities for those seeking to bring the Gospel to its people.

The geographical complexity of Indonesia, spanning thousands of islands across vast distances, poses a significant challenge for mission work. Remote islands, rugged terrains, and diverse ecosystems create barriers to accessing isolated communities where the Gospel has yet to penetrate.

Navigating this intricate geography requires innovative strategies to each unique setting in order to effectively reach those who have never heard the gospel.

Due to its extensive population and religious diversity, Indonesia is a major player in the 10/40 Window. A region spanning between 10 degrees and 40 degrees north latitude across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

This region is in desperate need of mission work, but an understanding of its complicated dynamics is necessary. So that as a result we effectively spread the gospel there. The country’s religious diversity, with a majority Muslim population alongside many other religious groups, adds complexity to this important mission field.

Indonesia’s cultural fabric is woven from over 300 distinct ethnic groups, each with its own traditions and belief systems. Navigating this intricate mosaic demands cultural sensitivity, respect for diversity, and a keen understanding of local customs to effectively convey the message of Christ.

In addition to the geographical challenges, linguistic diversity and cultural barriers create obstacles in reaching isolated communities. There are over 700 languages spoken in Indonesia! On top of that, governmental regulations and societal norms may pose additional hurdles for missionary activities in certain regions.

Understanding and respecting local customs, traditions, and societal norms is crucial for gaining acceptance and credibility within communities. Overcoming these challenges demands careful, creative planning tailored to specific local contexts.

Despite various challenges mentioned above, Indonesia offers abundant opportunities for impactful mission work. By collaborating closely with local churches and ministries, missionaries can come alongside them in the work and foster sustainable discipleship among diverse communities throughout Indonesia.

Customizing outreach strategies to suit Indonesia’s diverse cultural milieu is paramount for successful mission work. Some essential strategies for penetrating unreached territories are:

Establishing trust through authentic relationships

Mastering local languages for effective communication

Contextualizing the Gospel within indigenous frameworks

Engaging with influential community leaders

By adapting approaches to align with local customs and traditions, missionaries can bridge cultural divides and establish meaningful connections with those they’re seeking to reach.

Sharing first hand testimonies of transformational experiences from missionaries operating in Indonesia can serve as powerful motivators for others to engage in missions within unreached territories. These narratives of changed lives, divine interventions, and God’s unwavering faithfulness demonstrate the far-reaching impact of the Gospel message.

By spotlighting these stories, we can ignite fervor and commitment for believers to actively reach the unreached within Indonesia’s diverse cultural tapestry.

In conclusion, Indonesia’s strategic position within the 10/40 Window presents both intricate challenges and promising opportunities for mission work. By diving deep into the complexities of engaging with diverse cultures in Indonesia, addressing key challenges through targeted strategies, seizing opportune moments for impactful outreach initiatives, and sharing compelling narratives from the field, missionaries can leave an enduring mark on communities across this beautiful nation.

Many people don’t know where to begin when sharing the gospel with a Muslim. Muslims’ potential responses fill them with fear. Or maybe they desire to share but don’t know how to transition the conversation to a spiritual conversation which leads to sharing the gospel. This is a brief overview of the Any 3 tool (which was developed in Indonesia) used to share the gospel with Muslims.

Muslims want to talk about Jesus

It is so natural to get into a spiritual conversation with a Muslim. Islam permeates their culture so deeply that people discuss religion as a normal part of everyday conversation. They talk about praying, fasting, and religious holidays all the time. If you bring up a spiritual topic they will be eager to talk about it because it won’t feel forced.

Muslims love Jesus. They believe He is one of the 5 main prophets. They have no problem talking about Jesus and most of them (as you will come to find out) don’t actually know much about Him. As you ask questions about what they believe, they will be more inclined to hear what you believe. So it gives us an opening to share the truth about Jesus and the hope we have in Him.

Many Muslims are afraid of dying

Muslims do not know if they will be in heaven or not. They try to be the best person they can be, do the 5 pillars of Islam and hope they will be with God in eternity but they cannot know for sure.

We get to share the beautiful news with them that Jesus has already done the work for them! He lived the perfect life we couldn’t live and became the perfect sacrifice for us on the cross paying the debt for our sins. He rose three days later and conquered death for us! God’s wrath, that we deserve, was poured out on Jesus (Rom 5:8-9). Now we who hope and believe in Him are forgiven and set free from the bondage of sin! We know we will be with Him forever because we have been sealed with the Holy Spirit (Eph 1:13-14).

This is the Good News we are sharing to a lost world with no hope. God loves the 1.8 billion Muslims and desires for them to know the Truth that will set them free. He is using His children to spread the gospel to all the nations and make disciples who will love and obey Jesus (Matt 28:18-20). Let’s go make disciples of Jesus!

First get to know them and show the love of Jesus

We want to show our genuine love to each person we encounter and not view them as a “project.” The Holy Spirit is the one changing hearts. He just calls us to be faithful and share the gospel. He will do the work. When you meet a Muslim, get to know them by asking questions about their family, where they work, where they are from, etc. Show them you care about them and truly want to get to know them.

Bring up spiritual topics and pray for an opening

As stated earlier it is pretty easy to bring up spiritual conversations with a Muslim. You can ask them if they pray 5 times a day or fast during Ramadan. During religious holidays like Ramadan (Eid al-Fitri) or Eid al-Adha (Idul Adha in Indonesia) you can ask what they do to celebrate.

Ask the “why” questions as well to understand why they do what they do. Many will probably say they do it because they have to. During this time, pray for the Holy Spirit to give an opening to share the gospel. Pray for the person’s heart to be open and receptive to the good news.

Steer the conversation to talk about our sin debt

After getting to a spiritual topic and hearing a little about what they believe, next steer the conversation to talk about lostness. You can say something along the lines of “There are a lot of similarities among all the religions. People often desire to please God and seek forgiveness for their sins, don’t they? But we still sin all the time even though we try to do good. How are you seeking forgiveness for your sins?”

We want people to start thinking about their sin problem and understand they can’t erase sins by doing good works. Muslims usually say they perform good deeds, pray, fast, and fulfill their religious obligations to seek forgiveness for their sins.

Next, ask them:
“Do you know if God has forgiven your sins? When will God forgive your sins? Will God forgive them on Judgment Day?”

These questions seem a little redundant but they are actually very helpful to get Muslims thinking about sin debt. We want them to understand that they don’t know whether God has forgiven their sins, and their good deeds do not erase their sins.

Share the Hope we have in Christ by using the sacrifice stories

From here we can transition to what we believe and share the hope of Jesus. You can start by saying “What I believe is different. I know my sins are forgiven not because of what I do, but because God has already made the way for the forgiveness of sins through Jesus.”

You can then share about Jesus’ life, death and resurrection with them. Use the Adam and Eve story to talk about the first sacrifice and connect it to Jesus’ sacrifice. The first and last sacrifice story is a great way to help Muslims understand why Jesus had to die on the cross. They understand about sacrifices because one of their major holidays, Eid al-Adha, recalls the story of when God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son as a test of faith.

Ask them their thoughts, questions and if they believe

After sharing the gospel with them, ask them if they have ever heard this story before. Get their thoughts on it and ask if what you shared makes sense. Next you can ask if they believe that Jesus died for their sins and was raised from the dead three days later. You will be surprised at people’s answers! Many may politely say they believe in something different and will change the subject. Some might have heard the gospel for the first time and would like to learn more. You can offer to study the Bible with them to help them learn more. There also may be some who are ready to believe and would want to start following Jesus!

Follow up with those who believe

If you shared the gospel with a Muslim and they make the decision to follow Christ, now it is time to disciple them!

‘Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”’

Baptize this new brother and sister in Christ and begin teaching them to obey Jesus! Read the word together regularly. Ask them to invite their family and friends to study with you. Train them to share the gospel with others and make disciples of Jesus.
“I’m 47 and I’ve never done this before…I feel like I’m taking my first steps!”

Farah grew up in a Buddhist family but became a follower of Jesus as an adult. For years she has been faithfully following the Lord and is very involved in her church. She is a part of the worship team on Sunday mornings. She also leads a small group every Friday and attends most events and programs that the church puts on.

But God kept reminding her of “the calling” and she knew He had something greater planned for her life.

Two field workers began attending the church and they became close with Farah. They joined the Friday night small groups and worshiped with her on Sunday mornings. They shared how they intentionally go out each week to meet people and share the gospel with them, knowing that God is preparing people in the city to hear the gospel and believe.

They invited Farah to join them to learn how to share the gospel. She was eager to learn and joined them one evening. They went to a local mall and try to meet people there. She admitted she was very nervous and that she had never done this before! But she knew this is what God was calling her to – live her life to glorify God, share the gospel with those who have never heard, and make disciples of all nations(Matthew 28:19).

This was her first step and she was excited to see how God would grow her and use her to expand His kingdom in Indonesia!

The post From Buddhist to Follower of Jesus first appeared on Pray For Indonesia.

Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world with 235 unreached people groups. There is still so much work to be done to spread the gospel to every man, woman, and child in Indonesia. Prayer is the most crucial way we can see this spiritually dark nation reached. Many people want to pray intentionally and strategically for Indonesia but are sometimes unsure of how to pray. Here are 5 of the most crucial prayers for Indonesia.

1. Pray for the lost

Acts 26:18 – To open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

Not only is Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world, but also has 5 other major religions; Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. There are still millions of people who are lost devoting their lives to false gods and religions. Most have never heard the good news of Jesus and many have never even heard the name of Jesus. Pray for God to open their eyes so that they receive the forgiveness of sins through Jesus who died for them and rose from the grave.

2. Pray for unreached people groups (UPGs)

Psalm 96:3 – Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

According to Joshua Project, an unreached people group is “a people group among which there is no indigenous community of believing Christians with adequate numbers and resources to evangelize this people group without outside assistance.” Out of the 789 people groups in Indonesia, 235 are still unreached. Pray for God to send believers to these unreached people groups to share the gospel and disciple new believers. Pray His glory would spread to every people group and they would hear of His marvelous deeds. Visit the Joshua Project site to see the list of unreached people groups in Indonesia and specific ways to pray for them.

3. Pray for the Body of Christ

Ephesians 6:18-19 – To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel…

We need to pray fervently for our Indonesian brothers and sisters in Christ. That they may stand firm in their faith, understanding the riches of the glorious inheritance they have in Christ. That they may have boldness to proclaim the gospel to the lost around them. Pray for God to strengthen them when faced with persecution and for unity among the Body of Christ there. Indonesian believers are the ones who will be most effective in reaching their people. We need to pray for their faith to endure as they are surrounded by people who oppose the gospel message.

4. Pray for the leaders

1 Timothy 2:1-2 – I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

Pray for the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, and all those in authority to have discernment and wisdom as they lead the people of Indonesia. Pray ultimately they come to know Jesus and live their lives for him. Most of the leaders in high positions are Muslim since Indonesia is a majority Muslim country.

5. Pray for more laborers

Matthew 9:37-38 – Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

The harvest is plentiful in Indonesia and there are still many more lost sheep who God will bring into the Kingdom! Jesus has told us to pray for more laborers to be sent out into the harvest. Let’s pray God raises up laborers from churches, from other nations, and even from Muslim families. Who will finish the task in Indonesia by proclaiming the gospel, discipling new believers, and planting churches. There needs to be faithful gospel workers in every people group who know the heart language of that people group and will spread the gospel among them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is still so much work to be done and millions who need to hear the gospel in Indonesia. Even if we are not physically in Indonesia preaching the gospel, we can still play a crucial part in the Great Commission with our prayers.
1 John 5:14 – And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
1 Timothy 2:3-4 – This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
When we come to God and pray for the lost, unreached people groups, believers, and leaders in Indonesia, we know that He hears our requests because He also desires for Indonesians to love and worship Him. God is working and He invites us to take part in this beautiful work of seeing souls turning from darkness to light. Let’s accept His invitation and pray boldly knowing He is using us to make an eternal impact in Indonesia!
